I was assigned a room that had two holes in its carpet. The carpeted hallway leading to my room had bald spots. All lights in the room were harsh, cheap, blue white fluorescent bulbs just like a Motel 6. The room numbers along that same hallway were pasted on crookedly. At the exit, near my room, there was a stairway with a nasty broken handrail. The bathroom shower had a sliding glass door that would not close shut and that gravity pulled open, with the consequence of shower water soaking the bathroom's floor. The mattress was significantly thinner on the side closest to the bathroom. The bath towels were thin enough to have become throwaway cleaning rags at least a year before. The bathroom sink was so low that it may have been made for children. Although the Residence Inn by Marriot Shreveport Airport had the feel, maintenance, and upkeep of a very low end motel, its rate was much too high for what was offered. I wish that it was possible to award that awful place zero bones.

Expected excellence and not surprised

As usual, the reservation was made as I expected that it would be, and I am glad that was not a surprise. I was surprised that my request for a ground level room was not passed along, but no harm was done because I was quickly reassigned to ground level from the third floor, after I noticed.

Excellent staff, clean room

Excellent helpful staff was very dog friendly, clean room, clean bathroom. That should earn five bones, but I award only four. I stayed there for six nights, and the breakfast choices were predictable and wearisome: no English muffins, no butter, no margarine, sweetened low fat yogurt, fat free plain Greek yogurt, and the worst part was a bunch of bananas that almost nobody ate whose skins grew blacker everyday. They did have a big bowl of Red Delicious apples individually wrapped in plastic film. The best, most reliable food choice was a hard boiled egg sandwich made with a waffle, but the waffle irons' two minute timers yield undercooked waffles. Tossing partially cooked waffles back in for another two minutes produces crisp waffles.

Poor condition

Bathroom floor tiles dirty, grout between bathroom black when they should be the color of the tiles or white. Shower wall tiles cracked in the shape of a small woman or large child, shower pipe in large hole moved, carpet at bathroom entrance frayed, carpet elsewhere worn and tired. Door that leads to heat pump that is in every room I've seen in a Residence Inn had its louvers kicked in and bent, fluorescent bulb over dining table did not stop flickering, stuffing of living room chair cushion was visible, desk chair had back fabric frayed showing an exposed metal frame, one sliding closet door was off its tracks. Staff was friendly and helpful, breakfast was the same everyday without significant variety. Was not charged a pet fee after I mentioned all those things on my way out. Looks like neglect, but could be deferred maintenance.

Let me count the ways I love thee NOT!

Nice grounds, nice lobby, nice hallways.

The door to my room had its paint scrapped off, at lock level, fully across the door. My room's door lock had a deadbolt that could not be thrown shut. The knob that engages the deadbolt from the inside turned endlessly without engaging anything.

Nice security signs about locked doors to the outside, except that the door closest to my room had its lock permanently jammed open. That lock reader couldn't read my card key.

Nice room layout, certainly different, but no fridge or microwave in the room although I chose a room with both when I booked.

The handles to the front door, inside and outside, as well as the handles for the closet door were off the correct horizontal as if a strong, angry hand bent them out of position.

The bathroom smelled like fabric that has been wet for too long without enough ventilation. Think of a dishrag that was not rinsed clean and left to dry in a wet lump. Add the aroma of human urine to that.

The night table light was not plugged in. Plugging it in required moving the night table.

The night table was smeared with something brown under the telephone. The desk's surface was also dirty. All were water-soluble which means that housekeeping isn't doing its job well despite the nice signed cards that say that the room was specially prepared for me by Vinod.

The mattresses were deformed by the weight of the whales who have slept on them.

The bedspring frames creaked loudly upon sitting on the bed to lie down.

The carpet was frayed where you enter the bathroom.

The furniture is chipped, gouged, or its lacquer worn off exposing bare wood.

Enormous building that is shaped like a ...

Enormous building that is shaped like a squared off C with an indoor pool and a restaurant that means no breakfast built into the room's price. Nice lobby, nice room, nice internal courtyard for dogs inside the C. Dimly lit, dreary, grayish blue hallways that feel like a descent into a prison.

Everything was OK except...

Everything was OK except for the bathroom's aroma of mold 2 on a scale of 5 where 5 is strongest, but the piece de resistance was the strong scent of human urine on the floor around the toilet and the seat.

Royalty's Return

A return visitor was treated like royalty and the kitchen sent him a piece of crunchy bacon as a treat. Wonderful, quiet place that is bright green after a few days of northwestern rain. Royalty and I will return.

Fresh wet spot

Upon arriving, I found a wet spot on the carpet that was probably a left over from cleaning a previous canine occupant's solid or liquid waste. My dog sniffed the covering at the base of the bed as he sniffs other dogs' dry liquid waste; that implies that a previous occupant relieved himself against that bed. Let's cover the highpoints: small, cramped room, thin worn out towels, no place to wash hands next to toilet without opening a door, the weedy "lawn" looked as if 3 weeks had passed since it was last mowed.

This might have been a four bone review

It's a two bone review because the toilet bowl without being used smelled like old urine. Also, the folding door to the small closet did not close properly although it was in its overhead track; the problem seemed to be that the door was too long for the new, fuller carpet's pile. If the bowl was cleaned more often or effectively and if the door should close easily, others would not have a problem giving this establishment 4 stars, or bones.

Slow tub drain

The shower/tub drain can't handle the volume of water from the showerhead which has only a control for hot or cold temperature, not volume. By the end of my shower, I was standing in water that was above my ankles. Ten minutes after I left the shower, the tub was still draining slowly.

Excellent

The staff, the building, the rooms, the furnishings, the towels, the food, etc was beyond reproach. Maybe the neighborhood is not the best as it might be farther west near the Whole Foods Market, but it was OK. The one tiny problem is that there is a 100 sq ft patch of spongy, green outdoor carpet for the dogs to sue instead of grass. That should be hosed down daily because the runnier solid deposits are hard to pick up and stay in the fibers. Generally, the place was definitely OK.

Walking on a ship at sea inside an old building

It's situated on a fully urban, busy, four lane street, across from a gas station and a very well lit billboard, and separated from a liquor store by an alley where the locals relieve themselves standing up against the walls. No parking on site. Park in nearby side streets. No front desk; it's an absentee operation. Door lock codes are emailed or delivered via voicemail. It's an old building that has been renovated some, and my room was furnished with flea market antiques. The wood floor was not level, creaked, and walking on it reminds you of walking on a ship whose motion is affected by waves. The small fridge was draped with a brick red cloth covering its cooling coils. Firetruck sirens and the alcohol fueled musings of the street people were heard through the night. There was an empty, gallon water or juice jug along with plenty of dust under the beds. The kindest thing one may say about the Holiday Chalet is that is has a misleading name and charm, in the way that realtors use that word.

NOT exactly pet friendly, NOT logical either

(1) The desk greeted me with your dog may not jump on the bed or furniture. If you you think that your dog will jump up, you must call housekeeping for "an animal sheet." I requested one; it turned out to be a blanket.
(2) You may not leave your dog alone in the room.
(3) Your dog may not enter the dining area.

As I was alone with my dog, I checked out without breakfast. Did they expect me to tie my dog to a tree, a post, or maybe leave him in my car?

(4) The first room that I was assigned reeked of stale tobacco smoke.
(5) The second room did not stink of tobacco, but it did smell moldy as some old, poorly ventilated building do.
