Waste of time and money

LukEli K-9 Dog Training and Behavior Modification

We paid LukEli K-9 Training on December 6, 2017 to work on behavioral issues with a fearful/aggressive puppy. The puppy stayed with them for 4 of the 6 weeks that we paid for. The trainer came to us and said they could not help the puppy and recommended euthanasia. They offered to train a new puppy when we got one since they could not help that one.

We dropped off the new puppy on April 25 and he was returned to us on June 9. The puppy was supposed to have learned basic obedience and general “manners”. We also specifically asked that he be trained to ride in a car and also how to interact with other dogs, particularly small dogs. He is going to be a very large dog so this was important to us.

The trainer told us she did not bother training him to ride in a car simply because he is going to be too big to move in a car soon anyway. We are still working on his behavior with our smaller dog and continue to keep the two dogs separate. I asked for tips on leash training and was told we would have to bring him back for their off-leash training program.

We were supposed to receive a before and after video of his progress but did not receive one nor was it mentioned. When he was returned to us we received an instruction booklet for another dog that had been at their facility. We never received one for our dog. The trainer very quickly went over a few cues he supposedly learned and then left.

She came back a week after we got him back to check on his progress. Since it was early we provided breakfast. She fed our him table food and since then he has begged for food anytime we eat. She then told us she had no gas in her car and left her wallet at home and asked if we had a gas can. We didn't, so my husband followed her to a convenience store and put gas in her car. She then asked him to buy her cigarettes!

Our puppy also had a skin infection upon being returned to us. The trainer said he was probably allergic to his food. The veterinarian believes it was caused by something he came into contact with at their facility and not a food allergy, since he has been on the same food since he started eating kibble. We made two trips to different veterinarians to get treatment for this infection.

We had to hire another trainer to work with our dog. In two one-hour sessions, she taught him more than he learned in the entire six-week stay at Lukeli. It has now been a month since we hired her and our dog knows 6 commands and can also walk in a leash properly. We paid a fraction of the price for this trainer ($500 vs over $2,000).

On their website both trainers claim to be evaluators of the AKC Canine Good Citizen program yet they are not listed on the AKC’s website. They also claim to be members of The Association of Professional Dog Trainers. Again, they are not listed on the APDT website.

We asked for a refund but our request has been ignored. We even tried to dispute the charges on our credit card but unfortunately the time limit has passed. We are now considering taking this matter to small claims court. Please beware of these "trainers". You don't always get what you pay for.
