Hotel needs to get it together

Embassy Suites by Hilton San Luis Obispo

The hotel is attractive when you walk in and see the sprawling atrium, big seating area, and welcoming bar. But when it comes to actually staying there, especially with your dog(s), it is not that much fun.

Problem 1: They put us and our two midsize dogs in a room on the second floor, all the way on the other end of the floor away from the elevators. You can exit via stairway, but you can ONLY re-enter through one of the two main entrances. I've never seen another hotel where you could not re-enter a side door using your room key. It was a huge PITA every time we had to take the dogs out to do their business, doing that full loop all the way down, then back up, and down the hallway. And the stairs are not nice-- they are those industrial metal ones, and they scared the hell out of our little dogs.

Problem 2: Apparently there is something called a "chiller" that makes air conditioning work in a large building like a hotel, and during the first night of our stay, the chiller was down for the whole building, so our room (and everyone's, apparently) was sweltering, even though it was actually pretty mild/cool weather outside. We were given a box fan, but that didn't help much. The chiller was fixed the next day, but our room never quite cooled off.

Problem 3: Small matter, but somehow the microwave was missing one of its feet. I went to warm up a beverage and spilled it everywhere as the appliance suddenly tilted unexpectedly as I went to open the door.

Can't really call it a problem per se, but there was no room service available, as the restaurant had been closed (Covid related, I think) and was still not open at the time of our stay. It was easy enough to order food from a local restaurant and have it delivered to the hotel.

Ultimately we were fed up with the place and wound up leaving one night early. The only saving grace was the complimentary full breakfast (made to order omelettes) along with friendly food & drink service overall.
