Treasure ISland beach dog friendly?

I was on the beach behind the residence in and seen some dogs on the beach. I went grabbed my girl and went down to let her play to be told by some growchy old guy that I cant bring my dog altho I see them all the time there. Is there a law against having your dog on the beach and is there a friendly place to let her go down and see if she likes it? I know Ft. Desoto but I was looking local here in Treasure ISland as we are looking to buy here but I would like to take my girls to the beach.
