Not good

Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Urbandale/Des Moines

This was an extremely last minute booking. The staff (family) is nice. Due to having a dog the owner put us in a room close the outside door and on the first floor for convenience. However upon entering our room the pet urine smell was very strong. I was worried about being charged a fee which he said he would wave. Throughout the day the smell became unbearable but we couldn’t change rooms
because of the hotel being completely booked.

The owner advised they use a powder when cleaning the room, and he can send someone (his son) to minimize the smell. The smell cannot be masked in anyway unless fully washed out. This is the main thing that I did not like about this hotel. The overall cleanliness of the room was barely average. I had to purchase Lysol spray and wipes to feel more comfortable since it was a 5 night stay, but we left a whole day early cause we just couldn’t take it anymore.

The free breakfast consisted of waffles, syrup and juice with boiled eggs and I think some cereal. It felt very thrown together and below average. The room tv lost signal and the initial response to fix it was to unplug and plug it back in. The tv just stayed off after that. It was extremely overpriced. Super 8 is usually cheaper and much cleaner than this place. Your pet cannot stay unattended under any circumstance for any length of time period. After paying the $100 per fee I also had to find a local dog daycare to keep my pet.

This hotel is a place where you go when you have no other option. I would not recommend. Pet day care facility I picked was (Canine Country Club) beyond recommend if needed. The city is very pet friendly and has many places to keep your pet if needed. Canine Country Club is the only place that didn’t charge a fee and allows same day stay. We also visited Paws and Pints which is a huge place; one stop shop for your pet with great food/drinks for humans. Highly recommend.

Absolutely not

Ramada Tropics Resort & Conf Center by Wyndham Des Moines

This property is located directly off the highway. The outside area has not had a landscaping update in a very long time. Many of the plants look dead. The building looks worn down, chipped, and damaged. The inside smells heavily of chlorine, carpets are very old. Bathrooms are not clean and hot due to the extensive chlorine in the pool area. The pool water appeared dull or dirty. Several slides are not working. The entire hotel’s appearance it just in desperate need of upkeep, maintenance and remodeling. Also this place says smoke free, however we saw many guests smoking near the building which tracks back into the property. Not very welcoming for those that wish to stay away from second hand smoke.

It is clearly a very busy hotel due to the presentation and descriptions posted but several guest checking out were unhappy with their experience. Guest services was very nice and helpful; he was working by himself at the front desk during checkout time which made me wonder where his manager was and why they were not helping. This place needs to update their photos and provide more accurate description of the current state of hotel atmosphere. Corporate or regional manager needs to visit this location asap.
