Policy Changes Have Changed Our Opinion

The Kennebunk Inn

We stayed at the Kennebunk Inn last year and had a fantastic stay. We have a small dog who is well traveled. He doesn't scratch at doors or bark. When we booked for this year, we learned that only one suite is dog friendly and that they've had issues with dogs scratching door frames and barking, so they will not put dogs in the upstairs suites anymore. Monroe #5 is it if you have a party of 4 and need some privacy from each other, and even then a trundle-style bed and rooms being so close together make for a lack of privacy.

Second Time to Portland Lobster Co

Portland Lobster Company

My dog was a little more antsy eating here this time around. What's odd is that he settled right down when a set of labs arrived. Guess he just needed canine companions while we ate.

Lobster rolls aren't huge, but the amount of lobster to the roll is great. Fries are crispy and flavorful. Chowder is always good. They do have pitchers of beer, which is a nice change of pace. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor tent/patio.

Handful of Outside Tables Welcome Dogs

Cherie's

There aren't many outside tables, but if one is open, they are pet-friendly. Water bottles are sold inside, and some of the businesses on the walk along Main Street have water bowls outside. Incredibly friendly staff and a wide selection of pastries, muffins, quiches, soups, and more.

We had coffee (Carpe Diem is the coffee roaster) and pastries. Our dog was happy to share a little bit of my carrot muffin. Mostly, he loved the people walking by with other dogs.

Any Trip to Maine Deserves a Trip to Mackworth

Mackworth Island

My dog isn't too sure about city living. Sidewalks in Portland intrigue him, but potty break on a street? NEVER. Someone recommended Mackworth Island to us a year ago. We are so thankful. The groomed paths circle the island with trash cans at the trail's beginning. Don't be that person and pick up after your dog. A lot don't seem to do it when we've been, which is a shame.

The trail is 1.25 miles around. It's pretty level. To get to one of the beach areas, you will need to go down a bank, stairs, or rocks. I recommend the shale beach nearer the pet cemetery. It's quiet and the stone steps are easy for dogs (at least my rat terrier) to navigate. He's not as confident on open stairs.

In our walks, we've encountered plenty of people, dogs, chipmunks (much to his delight), and even a woodchuck. Bring water for the end of the loop.

Parking is limited. We went today on a Monday at 1pm and the lot was full. We lucked out as someone was leaving. Otherwise, it would have been the second time there was no parking available when we went in early May.
