An Easy, Pleasant Walk

Steep Rock Preserve

Steep Rock can be walked as a loop or as two separate down-and-back walks. The stretch on the right side of the river does have some very rocky, steep parts - but the left side of the river is beautifully flat and easy for folks like me, who are at best strollers and amblers rather than hikers. Poop bags and disposal can are available at the trail head, but you’re going to have to keep your mess with you as there are no trash cans along the trail. That’s the worst thing I can say - the trail is wide and follows the lovely river, with a few places to pull off and let your dogs into the shallow water. On nice days there are lots of other users - be aware of bikers and horses- so flexi leads may not be the best idea.

Great Park, Not Fully Fenced

Southbury Dog Park

Yes, the users of this park need to be more responsible about picking up after their pets… and yes, on weekends, the park does draw a large number of people whose dogs aren’t well monitored or trained, and who don’t understand dog park etiquette. Still, I’m amused by one of the comments here - “small dog owners don’t stay in the small dog area?” They don’t HAVE to! This is a park for ALL dogs, and all dogs should have good dog manners if they’re in a dog park. If you aren’t comfortable navigating around less-than-stellar owners and possibly problematic dogs, try coming on a weekday when more users are locals. It’s a lovely park, and even on a weekend, you should be able to find some space for you and your dog to play. As mentioned, do be aware of the current in the river - particularly after heavy rains or in spring melt season.
