Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail

The Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Previously an unused railroad corridor, this "rail-trail" is now a great place to walk Fido in Abingdon! The map below shows a parking area with convenient access to the Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has generously provided map data for this trail to Bring Fido for informational purposes only. For more detailed trail information, please visit TrailLink.com. Beautiful trail!

We biked the section from White Top trail head to Damascus. It was absolutely gorgeous! We rented a screened tag along trailer (typically used to transport toddlers) for our standard poodle. After a short bumpy start, he stopped trying to get out and enjoyed the ride without needing the screen enclosing him. We biked the full 17 mile stretch, so letting him run the whole thing wasn't an option. Also, there were a lot of other bikes on the path and I didn't want him to get hurt by other riders. Highly recommend the trail, but definitely have a plan for transporting your dog's if you're on bikes instead of on foot. The lower section of the trail is probably better for dogs, since most bikes finish at Damascus.

    Good for well behaved dogs

The VCT is great for well behaved dogs only. You will pass lots of other dogs and tons of bicyclists here. Abingdon to Damascus is great. Damascus to Whitetop is very saturated with bikes and it's much harder to enjoy the trail with my dogs there. It's a beautiful trail and very scenic. We try to walk it everyday.
