    Dirty!

Was so excited to take my dog swimming for the first time and yes, she did! Aside from that, very disappointed by the bay. Very dirty and lots of debris on the beach. I wouldn't go back in that water again.

    Ticks

I thought maybe it was an anomaly that we found 7 ticks after we came home from Sandy Hook with the dogs. The first one on my head!! The second one I found on my dog Lucky's ear, and 5 others in their bedding. I washed all the surfaces in hot water, vacuumed everything and my sister's dog still ended up with Lyme disease. It's a shame because this really is a wonderful area, but given how serious Lyme can (and how dense my dog's coat is), I'd be hesitant to go back, especially after reading the series of other reviews that echo my experience with ticks. Such a shame.

    <<TICKS>>

I took my dog here a few weekends ago. Since he wasn't allowed on the ocean side, we did a good amount of walking along the pedestrian trails. This is where he picked up over 15 TICKS. He was covered in them - I couldn't believe how many I pulled off of him. Weeks later, I am still checking him and have found a few more that I missed. Last straw was the tick I found crawling on my bed this evening. It seems he brought enough in to have started somewhat of an infestation. If you go to Sandy Hook with your dog BE WARY OF TICKS.

Nice On Leash area for dogs

Went there off season, the bay side area was deserted! Visited the ocean side, lots of fisherman. My dog had a great time and did a little swimming. I would be more inclined to stay on the ocean side, it was a lot cleaner.

Tick infested beach. Dogs only on the bayside which is gross in terms of water quality. Lots of debree in the sand.

    Quiet beach

We took our 2 dogs for the puppy's first birthday and they had a blast!!! The beach is very quiet and not crowded at all. Dogs are allowed on the bay area year round. We would def go back!!

    Sandy Hook walks

Sandy Hook is a great spot to bring a dog for a walk. They have a newly paved walking trail that begins at the entrance of the park and ends at the very back by the bay / Coast Guard site. They also have a paved path along the bay, by the picnic benches in the back of the park. I believe dogs are allowed only on the bayside beach OFF-SEASON. Its probably best to bring your dogs off-season or during the late afternoon hours during the summer to avoid crowds. If you go into the park during the summer months, go after 4pm so you wont have to pay the 10$ car entrance fee. During OFF-SEASON , which is before Memorial Day and After Labor Day, entering the park is free anytime during the day. BEWARE, there is tick - infestation in some areas along the tree-shaded trail and back by the bay. The area by the lighthouse has a sign posted regarding ticks. Check yourself and your pets before heading home!! Some things may have changed regarding the park rules, so check online for more info regarding Sandy Hook beaches//park.
