Best Beach in Hampton Roads for Dog Walking

We love taking our dog to Grandview Beach! I am only giving it 4 stars because parking can be a hassle at peak times due to on street parking but otherwise it's wonderful! The beach is only open to dogs in the off season so be sure to check their website for the most up to date information. Typically the beach is closed to dogs from May 15-September 15. The beach is wide and with plenty of space for your pup to run! Dogs are supposed to remain leashed but you will see owners with well trained dogs allowing their dogs to swim and run off leash. We have always had a great experience with owners being very responsible with their dogs. If your dog does like to swim, I have heard others say to be care to examine the water as there are some areas with debri/wreckage that your pup could get hurt on. Be sure to bring bags to clean up after your pet and fresh water for them to drink so they are not drinking salt water. We love it here and so does our boy Buddy!

    Nice, quiet nature preserve

We had a nice morning walk with dogs. There's a 1/4 mile trail to the beach. I give it 4 stars I stead of 5 because there were a lot of dog piles left on the path.

BEST DOG PLACE IN VA BEACH

I went the first week of April. On a Sunday. For me it was perfect. I had been on Virginia Beach VA (VAB). I had taken the dogs in the area where all the hotels and restaurants are located. Generally where the large Neptune sculpture is near the Hilton. As much as we try to enjoy it it is just hard to do because of all the people. There were a lot of dogs and people. This was the off-season so dogs could be on the beach at any time but there were so many people even on a leash it’s hard to navigate. I gave up and found this location on the Fido app. It was just what I was looking for. You park on the street and it looks like you’re in the middle of a neighborhood. You head off down the trail and it’s a beautiful walk with marsh and wetlands on each side of the trail. There are benches at various spots and then right before you get to the beach there are some trash cans were you can drop off your poop bags! Then it opens up onto a beach that is perfect for dogs. Very few people the only other folks I saw had their own dogs. Lots of seashells and a beautiful walk. I highly recommend this location if you want to go see a beach with your dog.

    Off season access only

This is a remote access beach. You walk in about a quarter to half mile down a dirt trail before you reach the beach area. Wonderful for dogs. Word of warning for those wanting to use the beach for swiming - this is a nature preserve, so their are ALOT of small tree trunks just below the water line which you may or may not be able to see depending on the tide, so be careful. The only reason I give this site 4 bones is that the City of Hampton needs to update it's policy to mirror that of the much more populated Virginia Beach. There dogs can use the beach in the high season as long as it is before 10am or after 6pm. This shows much more tolerance for fido. No one is using the beach before 10am (especially a remote access beach) except for the dog walkers. I hope they adjust this policy soon.

    Nature loving

This beach is great. Be prepared to walk it! It is a great place to explore and let the dogs run and swim. However, dogs strongly welcome during the off season.

    fun for all

this is a nice beach not alot of people or dogs, lots of wildlife to take in. its wonderful for dogs lots of room to run and swim. my only complaint is that its only open to the dogs in the off-season. word of caution to pet owners if you do take your dogs out there make sure you check them for tick when you get home.. .
