- SophiaNov 10, 2019Great Location!
I though my almost 4 month puppy would be over whelmed with the bigger dogs (as most of them were) but she had a great time running around with them and swimming in the water for the first time. Other dog owners were very kind to our pup and were very relaxed about letting their doggo have fun!
- JohnMar 4, 2019Decent little beach.
About half a dozen big dogs racing around on a weekday afternoon. There is no surf, which suited my ridgeback. She will fetch until dinner in calm water, but she hates waves.

We have been here several times and our dogs have a great time every time. Plenty of room to play and they love fetching into the water. Water provided for bathing and drinking. It would be nice if they had bathrooms for humans and some shade but other than that it is nice.

2 areas for large and small dogs and a fenced in beach area across the way. Beach area can get crowded but is great of you get it at the right time....
- WBMore than a year agoFenced Dog Beach
There are two fenced in areas for dogs on Davis Island - one is a beach and the other is your typical dog park. (for the person who says it's not a dog beach, they were on the wrong side of the road!) At one end of the beach part, you can go through a second gate to walk in the grass along the water. We really like that this is like two dog parks in one setting. We never go to the regular fenced park across the parking lot. It's a good idea to check the beach water quality before letting a dog swim - just search for davis island beach water quality and you'll find a site that reports test results. That said, it is industrial and we always plan for a bath after his swim. Just like any dog park, there are people who pay attention to their dogs and people who stare at their phones. As long as no one is there with a pack of dogs (meaning don't go on a weekday morning between about 8 and 9), we haven't had any real dog trouble. The other Tampa dog beach is at Picnic Island and while the water is probably cleaner, the beach is not - but it is usually not as crowded. If you have an hour to get to South St. Pete go to Fort Desoto to swim with your dog.
- KaseyMore than a year agoPLEASE no food or babies!
I sometimes come here when I visit my friend. Problem is; this is a DOG-park, not a swimming/picnic beach. There should be no kids under 6 (can easily get run over), and NO food..even dog TREATS. They (County and private$) have put alot of money into this park, please keep it nice for all the DOGS!
- BrianMore than a year agoNot for Small dogs!
Went there with my two small dogs 20 lb and many Big dogs 60 + pounds were trampling them. Then a couple of dogs start biting and push my dog out further in the water. My dog was scared the owners just said " that is just how my dogs play. Then called my dogs a "Pansy". Maybe they are but my dog also was almost paralyzed at 1 year old. I do not want my dog hurt. So I brought my dogs through the fence to the other enclosed area and then a lady brought in 2 greyhounds and they were very rough and they didn't care eithet. Why can't one section be for Small dogs?
- TiffanyMore than a year agoNot a dog beach
A nice park but if you are looking for beach access for your pup sorry no dogs allowed is posted at the little beach like sand box across the road.also no that their is no swimming posted for the canine companions
- AlexMore than a year agoGood but Crowded
One of the better off leash dog beaches in near Tampa - the water is for dogs only however and I would not trust swimming in it. The space is large and the grounds and average as far as cleanliness goes but that's really on individual owners and not on the park itself. The only downside id say was that it get VERY crowded and not all the dogs want to be there so it makes for some frustrated encounters. Go at odd hours to get the best experience!
- LaurieMore than a year agoHad a great time
We visited both Davis Island and Picnic Island today. We enjoyed both but preferred Picnic Island. We visited Ft. DeSoto yesterday. Our favorite was Ft. DeSoto, second was Picnic Island and third was Davis Island, mostly based on the Iroom for the dogs to run and play but certainly liked all. It's really nice to have so many good choices. This area seems very dog friendly almost everywhere and we are very happy we came with our three four legged buddies.
- LizMore than a year agoNice Place!
We had a great time, owners seemed to keep eye on their dogs - everyone super friendly and understanding. Could use more shade. Poo bags and rakes available - just wished folks would use them. Rinse off area available. Mostly sand and ground up shell - would suggest wearing beach shoes.

I brought my dog here and didn't even attempt the dog beach on a weekend as there was quite a crowd and too many dogs w/o attentive owners
The grass dog park was in fair condition
There was significant lack of Shade trees and cover from the sun
The owners seemed quite attentive and watched their dogs
Nonetheless given the financial and educational levels of the residents of Davis island I was taken aback on the lack of residential owner support and care of this park
Picnic Island is far better

Ill go ahead and list out my pros and cons then you can read what i have to say.
Pros: 3 different play areas, good amount of seating, large area, dog fountain, washing area, very smart owners. double gate entrance. large entrance area.
cons: could use more shade, good amount of sand in non beach area, sand in beach is roughThis is currently one of my favorite parks in Tampa. Ill break my review down by play area, the waterless play area, which is like a normal dog park. has one very large play area and a smaller play area that seems perfect for small dogs or letting a dog feel out the pack for a bit longer. the sally gate area with the double entrances is quite large and can had a number of dogs quickly. one of my favorite features is the gates are spring loaded. so you dont have to worry about closing the gate behind you. there are doggie bags located by the entrance. in side the park there are 3 picnic tables. 2 are shaded with shade cloth. and also 3 benchs 2 of them have wooden over hands. along the edges of the park there are a number of mangrove trees. and some bushes but nothing in the form of a large shading tree. the center of the play area has sand pit that is like 12' in diameter. but most of the park is covered with Florida type grass. the parents at the park are rather smart and i have never had an issue with any dogs there. any issue that has come up such as dominance the owner is quick to remove or help correct the issue. with all that being said we move to what i feel is the downside of this park, the beach play area is almost a complete 180. the beach sand is a little rough similar to aggregate in composition. the young palm tree do not provide much shade at all. and the 4 or 5 benchs and picnic tables to no have any shade coverings for you or your dog. I have only visited this side once, and i was very dissatisfied with parents that were. i could not figure out who many of the dogs belonged to. while at the park for less then 10 mins i had 4-5 dogs trying to hump my fixed female. needless to say i didnt spend much time to determine how clean it was. the water looked find. the beach is on an inlet so the water isnt going to be crystal. its more adapt to look like lake water. i would go for the regualar park and if the beach isnt busy maybe go to wash off my dog. there is a beach the is across the parking lot that most people go to with there dogs to sun bath at that has much nicer sand but you should have you dog on a leash there.
- TJMore than a year agoAwful
This place is dirty. Dirty beach, dirty water, what looks to be a sewage pipe at the far end emptying into the beach area. Not a lot of room for dogs to run either.
- AndyMore than a year agoNot a beach park!
What used to be a fantastic open area on the beach no longer exists, at least for dogs. They built the park across the street by the boat ramp. While there is plenty of room and your dog is unlikely to care, there is no beach access or shade. While their intentions were no doubt good, they have created a park that no one wants to visit. I came from Picnic Island, where there IS a beach and lots of dogs.
- KarenMore than a year agoOK
Although my dogs loved it there, I hated it. THe regular park has no shade! HELLO PEOPLE...WE ARE IN FLORIDA! It's hot 90% of the year! DOGS NEED SHADE especially when they are running around like lunatics. ;) The beach...what IS right about it? When we would go, I spent most of the time TRYING to clean up the glass on the shore. The water is also sooo dirty,I'd often see dogs of all sizes/ages get the runny poops IN THE WATER! It's horrible and I almost NEVER see people pick up behind their dogs at either! I'd give it half a bone, but it's not available - I like where it's located (even driving from St. Pete), but the city really has a lot of work to do to make it (as the very least) safe.
- Marcie and MaxieMore than a year agoGreat location....but
Davis Island "used" to be a nice park to take your dog. The beach has eroded leaving more rocks, glass, and other sharp debris exposed for your dog to get hurt on. I agree with other comments that the dog poop left there has ruined it for the rest of us. The park could be great again.
- Teresa hensonMore than a year agonice park
I enjoyed the park with my rat terrier. The owners of other dogs could be polite and pick up after their dogs but otherwise a nice park
- Amanda and LolaMore than a year agoJust ok... for our first doggie park
We are new to the area and new to doggie parks, we finally found the park (not very well publicized) and were a little disappointed. Not very many trees so it was SO hot. The sand in the grass was burning poor Lola's feet. I agree with the previous reviewers about the poop, it's everywhere. We are very consciences about picking up after ourselves, I wish others were too. There were toys there but they were gross and broken. We brought our own to share, water and bowl too. She did have fun with the other dogs she met, but they couldn't do too much playing due to lack of shade.
- SharonMore than a year agoDirty
Dave Island dog park should be a premier park, being right on the water. We checked it out a few months ago. Owners are not cleaning up after their dogs, or the majority aren't, which is a shame because it is a nice park. We had to walk looking down because there was so much dog poop everywhere. Dog owners who are too lazy to pick up after their pets ruin it for everyone. It only takes a second to clean up. We carry plastic bags with us every time we visit a park because we care about all the dogs. They shouldn't have to walk in that stuff either.
- Kristin & Puppy MurphyMore than a year agoWe love it!
I took my 6 month old lab (newly adopted) to the Davis Island Dog Park twice this week. He loved it! There is enough room to play on your own in the water or on grass, or you can play with the other dogs there. Both of our visits were around noon on weekdays and had about 5 other dogs there to play. I do hear that it is much more crowded in evenings and on weekends. About half of the beach is really rocky, so beware if the park is crowded. There's not much shade but are a few picnic tables to watch your dog play, drinking fountains and hoses to wash your pup off. Bring a towel and a water bowl!
