  Black Fly insanity

  We hiked to the top of Whiteface mountain yesterday with our two labs. We used the stairway. It was a good little trek up to the top. If you have a small dog, you may need to carry him. And it could be a bit challenging if your dog pulls. The view is stunning, truly. However, the black fly situation was unbelievable! Our dogs were literally attacked by black flies. By the time they got to the top, our 4 year old lab was vomiting from the massive number of bites. Our 2 year old lab was vomiting by the time we were going down. Our labs became lethargic and weak and our older lab almost collapsed. They developed massive lesions on their bellies. Our 4 year old lab hasn't eaten in over 24 hours and remains lethargic and unresponsive. Our 2 year old has swollen legs and groin. We bathed them when we got home and we pulled at least 50 flies off one of them as they embedded in his coat. We are sitting in an emergency vet as we speak. I imagine this is a seasonal issue here, but I wanted to share our experience so others might avoid this misery for their dogs. (We hiked up in late May). I will also share that the emergency vet in Burlington (Burlington Emergency and Veterinary Specialists on Marshall Ave) was fantastic.

  Breathtaking views

  This is one of the most beautiful views I have seen and so worth it. The hike was a little anxiety producing just because the rocks were big and some were slippery (luckily my dog didn’t pull.. but if your dog pulls, be careful!) the views were incredible and we loved it!!
