We walked here on 9-29-12 without our dogs. It's a nice walk, the paved section is around 5 miles from one end to the other and back. You can add some distance by taking the connector trail uphill to the city park and walking around the track there as well as walking on the unpaved portion that continues under 78 toward Sumiton. End-to-end with a loop around the park is 6.5 miles total.
I would not take a dog on this trail if it was the least bit interested in other dogs. We were followed 4 different times by different dogs along the trail. There are dogs all along the route and apparently no leash laws, at one point 6 small weenie dogs were aggressively running up and barking at us. They would run away if we turned around, but as soon as we started walking again, they were right on our heels. They followed us a good 1/4 mile.
The trail goes through a wooded area and parallels a couple different roads, it has a long downhill slope from 78 toward the terminus at the elementary school, but nothing too hard for anyone who could handle walking a few miles to begin with.
