This is not a good place to walk your dog. Too many cyclists going very fast. It is called the American River BIKE Trail for a reason, and the cyclists can be very rude if you are walking on the bike lane and not on the narrow path at the side. The best thing to do is leave the bike path and go off into the surrounding scrub brush. There are many small paths that wind through these areas and they are much quieter, although not good for older people as the ground is very rocky and uneven. However, I was more relaxed walking there as I was not concerned for my safety or that of the cyclists.

I have lived in Sacramento most of my life and have used the bike trail many times. My biggest problem with the trail is there are so many bikes on it and they go very very fast. One time I took two small dogs for a short walk to go about 300 yards to get an area off the trail and I was almost hit so many times I ended up turning around out of frustration. The trail has a narrow dirt trail on the side of the paved bike trail but my dogs would not stay on that little narrow trail and kept trying to get on the edge of the pavement. I am giving it two bones instead of one only because above the trail in certain spots is a levy road you can walk on for quite a ways but then there are bicycles there as well, just not as many as on the paved trail.
