Met a local walking his dog at the trailhead. He was very friendly and made me feel safe parking my car in the cul-de-sac which was at the end of a residential street. Brought our dog along the trail for about 2 minutes and met one of the people who takes care of the trails and he recommended we check out the big boulder trail. It is November at the time of writing this and we didn't see another person after that. The trail we took ran along the Taconic parkway for the first 15 minutes or so. We decided to keep our dog on leash for that time even though he is very attentive and constantly checks in without going too far off leash. The trail had the option to diverge to the right away from the parkway. At that point we let him roam off leash and he was in his glory. The trail was easy and matted with leaves and he jumped and dove and trotted around. We felt completely safe letting him roam. All in all we had a great day, wound up hiking about 3 or 4 miles and were on the trail for about 2-3 hours. This is a great getaway. its about 50 miles and less than an hours drive from NYC with little traffic when we went. I highly recommend it if your dog has some pent up energy from too much city living!
