We love going to the Maroon Bells whenever we get the chance. It is best to get there early and before dawn for prime viewing location and less crowds. We have never had a problem having them to ourselves for a bit, but you have to time it perfectly! Don’t miss this favorite attraction in Colorado!

Great hike and beautiful. I would rate it as moderate and great for dogs. Crater lake is a treat when you arrive and the little pup can cool off. If you continue the trial past Crater, is not busy and as beautiful and you can see some water falls. You have some streams in the way as well.
It can get really busy with a lot of different skill people. The parking lot can get full early and you may need to take the bus from the parking lot at the bottom. I would suggest to get a very early start. It can get hot as well. All dogs are well behaved in general.
- PhyllisMore than a year agoMaroon Lake, Crater Lake and Buckskin Pass Trail
Easy to moderate trail from Maroon Lake to Crater Lake. Very rocky in spots - take a walking stick with you. When you begin to glimpse Crater Lake, take a right at a sign post on trail that only indicates numbers (1970, 1975)l. Take the right side that says 1975. The trail to Buckskin pass is steeper than the trail to Crater Lake, but it has a suprisingly constant grade. That means that as you begin to go up, you know how it will be... the whole way to the pass. The views are marvelous and change as you go up. Water for Fido is available in several places along the way (I hiked the first week in October). This was peak leaf color this year (2011) and there were forests of yellow aspens and other colored trees and bushes. I got some amazing photos.
