This is a really terrific on-leash dog friendly hike in LA. The hike begins right near the bottom of Fern Dell Drive. There is a lot of street parking available if you get there relatively early, which is key due to the lack of overhead shade on the trails. We went all the way from the lower portion of the trail to the Observatory and then on to the summit of Mt. Hollywood Trail and back down, stopping at the Observatory for a little snack on the way down.
The trail is pretty steep in some places. It's definitely good exercise and the views are spectacular. Wear sunscreen or bring a hat, and plenty of water.
We shared a sandwich from the Cafe at the End of the Universe and sat at some picnic tables near the restrooms which were in the shade because were not allowed to sit at the outside seating by the restaurant with our dog. The food pricey but okay and it was a nice break after 2 hours of hiking. What makes this hike standout is that there are multiple places to stop for refreshments and/or restrooms and even though you see a lot of people, it is not crowded because of the numerous trails which break off throughout the park, unlike Runyon Canyon, which is nearby, overcrowded and has none of those amenities (but still a good hike and off leash dog friendly). We hiked five or six miles but you could spend all day there on the various trails. There are amazing views of the LA basin and the Hollywood Sign, as well as the the Griffith Observatory. There is also a vegetarian restaurant at the bottom of the park called Trails, which is open until sunset. For those who are cupcake lovers, there is a Crumbs bakery nearby, which we took advantage of for dessert!
We will definitely come back sometime to check out the observatory proper.
