We were able to let our dogs off their leashes & saw many others doing so. However, we kept about having heart attacks as we had to constantly watch for vehicles. Even though the posted speed limit on the beach is 15 MPH most ppl are jerks and we're doing 45+! They are also unpredictable as a lot of the ppl feel the need to swerve through the sand. I think it's very dangerous unless your dog listens like a cadet - even then if they took off after a bird or something at the wrong time it would be over as it would be impossible for the vehicle to stop in sand going that fast. We stayed about an hour, the dogs loved it, but that was all my heart could take as it skipped a beat more than once thinking they'd be run over at any moment. We did enjoy the drive - they're French Bulldogs & couldn't have walked that far in the heat so having AC plus sightseeing was awesome - but sadly we didn't see any wild horses and drove almost to Virginia. I began to think they were a myth as most of the tour groups (some of the worst drivers btw) also did not appear to be having any fun. Oh well! Enjoy, be safe, take plenty of water for you furbabies & watch out for cars!

Went up to Oregon Inlet Sept 2012. Natl Park Service has instituted a 6' leash law on all of the beaches up and down the Outer Banks. Fines are pretty steep if you get caught. I did find a hiding spot just south of Salvo (south of OI), called Salvo Day Use Area, where the beach is behind pines and dunes and you can get away with using a long line. Lot of other dogs in this area playing in the Pamlico Sound. The surf shops use this area to teach kite & sail boarding.

I've been vacationing in Nags Head for almost 20 years now and always rent a dog-friendly house. In 2010, my family (including my black lab puppy, Kayla) spent almost every day on the beach at Oregon Inlet. It's great to pack up the truck, drive onto the beach and waste the day away in the sun. Kayla loved the ocean at first site - the waves are not TOO huge... great for retrieving her bumper. There are always other dogs around too for some play time - extremely dog-friendly place! We plan to spend most of our 2011 days there as well!
