Eastern Trail The Eastern Trail is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Previously an unused railroad corridor, this "rail-trail" is now a great place to walk Fido in South Portland! The map below shows a parking area with convenient access to the South Portland Pathway. The tree-lined stone dust and paved path boasts views of the skyline while hugging the edges of a tidal estuary basin. There are abundant opportunities for birding, biking, running and walking. The Back Cove trail was first visioned by James Phinney Baxter, mayor of Portland in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
