- StanleyNov 14, 2023Fort Wilderness has changed
For wilderness has changed, on big change has been the cost of staying one night. The campground is clean for the most part and parts dog/pet friendly. However, I am seeing at least a cost to stay up at least 3 times more than it was some years ago. Dogs had the option to stay at the convenient pet center at the Fort Wilderness parking area or at one of the convenient pet centers at any of the parks entrances. These are now gone.
Disney changed to one central pet center which you need a CAR to get to for placing your pet for the day. Note that it is recommended that you visit your pet at least once during your pets stay at this "convenient" pet center. I did ask if the pets were allowed on the bus to go to the "convenient" pet center and they said NO, you must provide your own transportation.
Fort Wilderness has not changed much over the years other than the fencing around where a new hotel would be built by the docks. The pets have areas they can stay and be walked, it is quiet and quite enjoyable. During holidays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, campers tend to decorate their campsites, sometimes extensively, through out the campground.
Dog trails filter throughout the campsite, some along the canals, and you can still view some remnants of the old Fort Wilderness Rail Road tracks and bridges if you know where to look. Should your dog get away or lost, Disney will search for them, just let them know. They claim they have never lost a pet yet.
My rating is directly weighed on the lack of a convenient pet center and the high cost (hotels normally charge these rates) for a simple campground site.

We love Fort Wilderness! Everything is always very clean and well kept. We stay in the campground area since we have a motor home. Plenty of sidewalks and lots of trails for Tasia to explore. There are two large dog park areas, one for smaller dogs and the other for larger dogs. Tasia always visits the Bike Barn for a dog treat. And you never know who you might see. Check out photos of Tasia with Chip and Dale!

- RodmanSep 21, 2021Relaxing and Pet Friendly, Avoid Cabin 7
We had a restful stay on Drummond Island at the Yacht Haven Cottages and would consider staying with them on our next stay with a few takeaways from this trip. Perhaps this may help you as well in your selection of cabins hopefully.
- We were assigned Cabin 7 that practically had no privacy as the interior could be seen from others outside from the patio slider on the road that passed our unit
- The main door that opens to the cabin opens to the road that is also the entry and exit to all the other cabins so we would hear incoming and outgoing traffic.
- The rear entry that is from the kitchen also faces the road that leads to the other units that gives a clear view in our kitchen and living room area
- The 2 bedrooms and bathroom also have a clear view inside the other guests on the hill above us looking directly down. I caught someone looking down at me in the bathroom while peeing one morning while the window was open to vent the room.
The clerk pitched this unit as one on sale and now we understood why this may have been - it's less desirable due to the reasons I pointed. I will definitely stay with them again BUT now I have better layout of the premises, I would opt for another unit directly on the waterfront or hillside looking down. The unit we were assigned was poorly constructed because you have no privacy.
Inside the unit had a dated feel that was clean and the bedding was comfortable and wifi was fairly good. The TV options were not helpful as the screen was grainy so having some option for entertainment may help if you have kids along on your trip. Ive attached a few pics for reference to give you an idea and trust this will help you solidify your decision on where to stay or perhaps a better cabin than the one I was assigned. All the others were either waterfront or hilltop view but 7 was definitely not desirable. They are pet friendly and the price is reasonable. Plenty of areas to walk your little ones as well.
- FrancesMore than a year agoPets are now welcome in cabins
Finally, our dog was welcomed to stay with us ina Fort Wilderness cabin!!!
The price is $50 plus tax per day, not much more than boarding in a local kennel. Many Cast Members are not aware of the new policies.
At checkin, after paying fee, you will receive a Pluto bag containing bowls, a mat, and poop baggies. Pets may remain unaccompanied up-to 7 hours. It’s a good idea to bring a carrier in case you want to transport your pet. As mentioned, stay within pet friendly areas. We would hate to lose privileges because of folks who don’t follow these rules.

Effective 10/15/17, pets are now allowed in select Disney properties, including Fort Wilderness Cabins!

Love this campground but would love to see a few cabins that allow pets. Our dog is better mannered and causes less mess than some kids. Plus she is much quieter too! Wish disney would consider future pet friendly hotels or cabins.
