The log cabin theme is everywhere in this hotel — even in the bathroom — but the result is dark, dated rooms and common spaces. The staff is friendly but the amenities are few - breakfast was probably the worst we had on our road trip. Beware if you’re staying on a weekend in the summer. This appears to be the hotel of choice for traveling youth sports teams, and kids run the halls throughout the evening. Not a problem if your dog is mellow, but the noise put our dog on high alert!

We have stayed here several times and, while we love the whirlpool bath and screen porch, our dogs love the wooded surroundings and pet-friendly rooms. Quite a few restaurants in the area are dog-friendly, the Greenbelt is a great place to walk, and Snookie’s Ice Cream Parlor gives your pup a free doggie cone. We love stopping in Des Moines.
