Reviews

I was almost put off this place by the previous reviews, but we had our dog's license with us and had no trouble getting a table in the outside area on a nice day in November. There was another group with a dog as well. That dog barked a bit now and then, but no one seemed bothered.
The service was great as was the food. I will definitely visit again when I'm back in Salem. - KristenJul 12, 2022Great experience, good food
They did check in with us that Ace was up to date on his rabies shots, but I was not bothered by this. We got a cozy spot in the corner and my anxious little pup had plenty of space. Water was offered to my pup immediately.
We really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. - MichelleJul 15, 2021Very dog UNFRIENDLY and people unfriendly too
we attempted to go there a party of 7 with 2 dogs. One a 4lb Pomeranian in a stroller, the other a 20lb mini Aussie. We were “greeted” by a very angry looking man who immediately said that it would be too tight with 7 people and we could y have 2 dogs. He then asks for their rabies tags and tells us no restaurant in Salem will seat us with dogs with out their tags(which were in our RV). But he proceeds to tell us he wouldn’t seat us anyway with 2 dogs. His attitude was so mean and aggressive. Oh and we called another restaurant from BringFido and asked if we needed their rabies tags to be seated and they said “what? why would we need to see their rabies tags” So on top of being a rude jerk, they guy was a liar too.
- TracyJun 16, 2021Great outdoor spot for seafood.
Dog and kid friendly outdoor seating. They brought our dog a bowl of water. Several other families had their dogs with them too.

We traveled to Salem from PA and found this place prior to going. Looked really good and we saw that it was dog friendly. Once we got there we were told you needed your rabies tag. Luckily our vet was still open and emailed us the paperwork quickly. Food was great, just difficult to get in if you don’t have the tags on, so not a convenient place to go with your pups.

They won’t let your dog in without their rabies tag.
- WendyMore than a year agoSo Dog Friendly!
We frequent The Shanty often with our pups. Always clean, great food and they even accommodate our pups with a fresh bowl of ice water every time! Best place ever to people watch in Salem while enjoying a lunch or dinner out with our pups.
- M.More than a year agoDon't waste your Time
After having taken the time to thoroughly review their website and make sure they were dog friendly,my group and I eagerly searched for their location. We were excited to try out what looked to be an amazing piece of Americana. We got a bit lost walking there and when we arrived the patio was cleared but tables and chairs were still there just locked. So since you deemed them dog friendly we went to them and asked if there was anyway they could just throw down a table and chairs and we could be served. They without even giving it a thought turned us away to another establishment. So her you go friends take your money and dogs and go somewhere else. And let's not trouble them with our money or time. Leave them to the non dog owners.

My husband and I came here with our dog to sit on the patio. The food was good and they had tables with umbrellas to help keep off the heat.
