We decided to visit on a whim as we all needed to get out of the house, so we packed up the car and took to Chippokes. The park was big and spacious, but there are fewer trails than most other Virginia State Parks, and some walking paths were closed due to erosion. If you're looking for a place to take in a picnic with a view of the river, this is the spot!

Our dog loved walking around and was allowed on the beach as long as he was on a leash (we asked the park ranger). Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. The kids searched for and collected fossils. We did not tour the antebellum homes so I’m not sure what the dog policy is for that.

Leashed pets welcome in most areas. Some of the historical farming exhibits are outdoor shelters so the pups can still be with you while you read the historical plaques. 4 bones only because there are some restrictions even for leashed pets.
