Bald Head Island Beaches

Bring Fido to play in the sand at the dog-friendly Bald Head Island Beaches in Bald Head Island, NC. You and your pup can explore 14 miles of pristine beaches. You'll need to take a pet-friendly ferry to get there (from Southport), but once you arrive, you'll find that dogs are allowed off-leash on any of them year-round. The only exception to this is in turtle nesting season when dogs must be leashed from sunset to sunrise. South Beach features long stretches of sand and calmer waters, while East Beach is better for boogie boarding and surfing. If you don't want to bring beach gear along with you on the ferry, you can rent everything you'll need from Riverside Adventure Company. Visit Website

    Amazing! We saw dolphins!

We had the entire place to ourselves and had a blast running around, even saw 2 dolphins swimming not far from the shoreline

    Love For Bald Head Island!

We have been coming to Bald Head Island for over 10 years and this was the first year we brought our two 1-year-old German Shorthaired Pointers. They love the beach just as much as us and our dogs before them! Everyone on the island is so nice and everything is so dog friendly! Our dogs love to ride around in the golf carts and go for nice long walks down the beach (on or off leash). This is the perfect dog friendly beach for any dog and owner! Your dog has so much freedom to run up and down the beach, chase seagulls, and play in the water!

Thank you!! Finally a dog-friendly beach in NC!

Finally! Finally! I found a truly dog-friendly beach in North Carolina. Sadly, most of the beaches in NC have very restrictive or prohibitive policies regarding dogs on the beaches. Why would I bring my dog to the beach and keep her on a 6 foot leash and/or not allow her in the water, or only go before 9 am or after 6 pm? Awful policies in this state regarding dogs on beaches. This place is a shining example of a beach where dog lovers can allow their WHOLE family to enjoy the sunny beach without restrictions. Dogs are allowed to run free without leashes here. This is as long as they are polite and well-behaved of course. There are a couple of barriers to this getaway however. I think these barriers also cut down on poorly behaved pooches/owners, however. Getting here and getting around certainly test your commitment to taking your dog to the beach. You have to take a 20 minute, $22 round trip ferry ride. Then to get around on the island and go to the different beaches, you need to rent a golf cart at $100/day. Alternatively, they have a tram service to get around. Overall, this was a wonderful experience and this is now my go to beach getaway in NC. Oh, no dogs in the beach after dark during turtle season (summer).

I have taken my dogs to BHI for 30 years. They love every instant they are there . Chasing birds that never get caught, surfing the waves, and running for miles are just a few of the highlights.
