    Fido is welcome at the dog-friendly Harriman State Park in Ramapo, NY. Your furry hiking partner must always be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and display their rabies vaccination tag. Dogs are prohibited in buildings, beach/bathing areas, Beaver Pond Campground, Welch Beach or Sebago Cabins. Visit Website

      Fantastic Hiking and swimming opportunities

      Harriman state park is one of my favorite places to hike with my pups! Many of the trails have streams to cross and lakes for the pups to swim in along the way. The official rule is 5ft leashes but many (most) of the trails are lightly used (practically empty during the week) and the hikers are very tolerant of off leash dogs - I suggest calling out to other hikers approaching to ask if they are ok with the dog being off leash. There are some suggested routes in the book , Best Hikes for Dogs in and around NYC and Beyond (this collection is great for places all over US). But the park map lays out many trails and they are all dog friendly so you can design your own hike (I always look for trails with water along the route)
      AND, for us city dwellers, the park is only 1 - 1 1/2 hours depend on the trail you pick.
      Definitely check it out for some great hiking and even camping!
