    Great, but needs some maintenance

I took my new dog there yesterday, having not been for several years. As noted, it is significantly smaller than before. Not sure what happened. There. Still, it is much larger than pretty much anywhere else and still lots of woods and fields and river to explore. However, as I learned the hard way yesterday, there are burdocks EVERYWHERE, all along the main trail. While I understand how difficult it would be to clear the property, they could be cleared away from the trails. Perhaps a volunteer crew or something is needed. Just a heads up if you go, your dog will likely come home full of burrs.

    Used to be great

Some A-hole bought up most of the property. It is now mostly private. Not worth mudding up the dogs for. Crying shame.

    Great Dog Park!

This is a great dog park. Having now traveled cross country and visited several "five bone" reviewed dog parks with my lab mix (visiting son in mountains), I have come to appreciate this "home" park more than ever. Here is what you need to know:

    a. This is a very large dog park, with access to river, pond, woods and meadow. The paths are well-marked, and the dog area enormous compared to virtually any other dog park you will find, not only in Wisconsin, but in the country.

    b. Dog owners are friendly and helpful. Most importantly, they understand that the dogs do a better job of communicating than people do. I go almost daily, and my fella has never had a negative experience.

    c. The owners almost all take care of the droppings. Because it is a large park, it is common for the owners to pick up poop in a bag, leave it on side of trail, and pick it up on way out. Most also pick up other dogs bags as a courtesy. Seeing bags on the side of the trail is not a sign of inconsiderate owners, it is proof that they are considerate. I walk 3-4 miles and do not carry the poop the whole way, but always pick up my dog's bag on the way out (unless someone else has taken it, in which case I will pick up a bag or two on my way out).

    c. There are not separate areas for small and large dogs. But with such a large area, this is not a problem.

Until I visited 20 or so dog parks on my trip west, I never understood what a gem this park is. The ONLY down side is that there is only one garbage receptacle (hence the bags along trail), and no poop bags at entrance. So remember to bring your own bags, and everything will be great!

Finally, because it is such a large park, you will be able to enjoy numerous birds (owls, herons, and birds of prey are common, depending on the season), fauna, and my dog always sees (or thinks he sees) squirrels who want to be chased (he has never caught one, but is very proud that he often comes close ... even if there is no squirrel).

Seriously, this is one of the best dog parks I have ever seen, and any low ratings are likey because people see areas for improvement, rather than how much better this park is than any other opportunities for their pet.

    My dog loved it!

We visited Johnson Dog Park for the first time yesterday. There were lots if trails and some of the regulars have me some pointers on where to go and our dogs became fast friends.
I learned that all the trails loop around so you can't really get lost, we want through twice in an 1 1/2. The park is not fenced in but is huge and my dog stayed near me on all the trails. The river follows along the trail so the dogs can go in and out as they please.
The only downside were the mosquitos. Use bug spray!!
About a half hour drive for us but we will definitely be back!

    great place!

Really impressive place. Truly doggy disneyworld. My pup left filthy and tired. It was a blast!

Go when you have a lot of time. You can easily spend all day exploring and getting lost in the trails.

A follow up on other reviews I've seen: there are garbage cans near the entrance so that must be a more recent improvement. However I didn't notice any out in the park area.

    My dogs love it!

This is a great dog park! I have been going here for years with my three dogs. The people and dogs are friendly. There are trails that are wooded, trails that follow the river and a trail in an open field. There is a pond and a river that my Labs love to swim in. Winter, Summer or Fall this dog park is the best. The park is not fenced in.

if you want to dog sit

I agree with dog whisper ...a ton of dog poop down the main path....also many people stand around and talk and just let there dog run out of control. I walked the whole park with 3 other dogs I never meet.. owners where talking at the end of the main trail in. Also many mean dogs wanting to start fights and owners do nothing and if you call the police they do nothing . they say its at your own risk. will never go again...

Nice park... but no trash bins?!

The park itself is AMAZING! It would easily be a 5 star park, except for the fact that there are no garbage cans onsite! NOT ONE! This means that if your dog poops, and you clean it up, you are stuck carrying a bag of poop the entire time you're there, and then presumably taking it home in your car with you, because there wasn't a trash bin in the parking lot either! Based on the amount of piles I saw laying around, I think the majority of people don't care to walk around the entire time with poop in their hands. I also saw multiple poop bags tossed to the side of the main trail by people who picked it up and obviously got tired of carrying it around. It's a nice park, but it may not stay that way if the Parks department doesn't put in at least a few trash bins along the path so that people can clean up after their dogs.

    Colorado Dog Approved!!!

My son is visiting me from Boulder, CO with his dog and I wanted to take them to an off leash dog park for some exercise. I googled off leash parks in IL and WI and Johnson Dog Park came up. We made the hour drive from outside Chicago and it was sooo worth it. What a spectacular dog park. Great hidden trails and the dog didn't stop running and playing in the river for hours. Plan on going again before he heads back to the mountains.

    Best we've found

HUGE acrage with lots of hidden paths and valleys to explore. Spent two hours wandering around lost in the muddy woodlands until we stumbled back into civilization. Proper dog park if you ask me. Best you'll find unless you live in the countryside. Difficult to find at first but if you just go a little south of 4 mile road on 38 it'll be right there.

    Pleasantly Surprised

I had read the post on this site after exploring the internet for off leach dogs parks in Racine County adjacent counties. So far I have found none in comparrasion to this park. Most parks in this area are basically a fenced in yard and many charge you just to go in. Not this park. This is the only dog park that lives up to the name "park" It's very scenic, your pet and yourself will have a lovely time here. I like that it's off leash and not just a fenced in area but trails to explore you and your dog will be very happy visiting this park. Five Stars!!!!!!

    A MUST VISIT

I would ignore the review posted prior I frequent this park year round and I have never seen any of that. There is nature trails and a pond for your pet to take a swim in. It is well maintained and the people that frequent the park are very freindly. This is not your normal fenced in dog park. There are various trails some that follow the path of the river and no matter how many times I go which is daily there is always a new path I find in the park. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, NO FEE, WELL KEPT, FRIENDLY PEOPLE, OFF LEASH, 28 ACRES OF SHEER HEAVEN

    Dog Whisperer

While traveling thru Racine recently,we happened to stop at the park. There was so much dog feces on the path from the parking lot that we turned around after a couple hundred yards. It may be a nice park, but I am not about to keep my eyes peeled to the ground to avoid land mines.
