Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, located in Borrego Springs, is the largest state park in California. Although dog-friendly in some areas, pups must be on a leash no longer than six feet and under immediate control. Pets must be in a tent or vehicle during nighttime hours and are not allowed cross-country or on hiking trails. Despite not being able to access the paths, you can still enjoy the rugged landscape formed largely by erosion from rain, snow, ice and wind. Visit Website

    Protecting the desert

Dogs aren't allowed on hiking trails anywhere in the state park (understandably, the desert is fragile and too many dogs would endanger native plants/animals) but they are allowed on wash/dirt roads and on the short native plant trails around the visitors' center. There is a 0.6 mile (1.2 mile) round trip sidewalk through the desert from the visitors' center to the campground, which was gorgeous in early spring, as everything was green and flowers were starting to bloom. Bring plenty of water.

    Limited, But Enough.

I wasn’t s sure that camping in this state park would be any fun for my dogs, because they are not allowed on the hiking trails. But, we did find that the campground was large enough to walk around , and there is a 0.6 mile long sidewalk that goes across the open desert to the Visitor Center in which dogs are allowed! This was more than enough for my two seniors. Also the city of Borrego Springs is nearby, which isn’t state park, if your dogs need more freedom. The city also has over 100 giant outdoor sculptures in the desert that are dog friendly, and some dog friendly restaurants.
