    Dogs love this

Although the write-up claims dogs on-leash only, the signs at the trailhead mention "being in control of your dog at all times," not "dogs must be on-leash at all times," nearly everyone lets their dogs off-leash. If you have a problem with this, this is not the place for you, however, our dogs love the freedom and this is one of the few places in Los Angeles County where you can hike with your dog off leash. It's steep hills on both sides, so the dogs pretty much must keep to the trail. You SHOULD have verbal control of your dog, as the trail is shared with mountain bikers who sometimes come down at high speeds, but it's wide and visibility is good. We love it here, my only minor gripe is that there's little shade and it's not good on a hot day.

    rarely crowded?

Bad day to pick this trail I guess. It was packed w/bikers and over 90% of the dogs off-leash. Think dogs gone wild! Because my one year old large dog was leashed for good reason, he's learning his manners, I was made to feel guilty because he appeared to be the agressor. I felt like I had entered someone's else's turf, unaware of the unspoken rule that no one leashes their dog here, and everyone's freindly, like some southern californian paradise! For those of who like to explore many 'dog friendly' hiking trails in socal, avoid this one if you are unsure of your dog's temperment, even though you may think you're being the responsible one by leashing him/her!

    Queensferry road

Some local residents gave me a great tip to hike in the shaded canyon instead of the fire road where there is no shade. Going up on Westridge Road from Mandeville, take a left onto Bayliss then another left on Queensferry. At the end of the road is the gate. You can walk around the gate to get to the trail. Great, shaded canyon hike.
