Good dogs, bad dogs, good people, bad people

Autumn and I frequent the Calabasas Bark Park nearly every weekend. It has both the good and bad. Traffic can be crazy here and everywhere. There are bad dogs with worse owners so we try to keep an eye for both. Ann, I am sorry for your loss. There are introverts and extroverts at the Bark Park - it is hit and miss sometimes <like dating>. I hope that you come again soon. San Diego sounds great! Autumn and I will head down there soon! My favorite dog park, so far, is in Buellton...now if someone builds a canine amusement park, we will come...

    The vibes are off

I’ve lived in Calabasas for the majority of my life and it’s a well known fact that this park is awful. Not because of the park itself but because of the people. They’re guarded, mean, unwelcoming and altogether rude. Unless you have been invited by one of the regulars you can expect to be treated no better than the scum at the bottom of the ocean. What ever happened to “live and let live”. Other people in this community deserve to utilize this dog park outside of your weird Calabasas dog cult. It doesn’t matter how well behaved your dog is or how well you follow the posted rules, these people will go out of their way to make you uncomfortable because you’ve invaded their territory that is ACTUALLY A PUBLIC PARK. Y’all need to learn how to treat people with kindness.

    We love this park!

My wife and I discovered this park in the spring of 2022. We live in Canoga Park, CA and were looking for a place to take 10 month old Brittany to play and socialize with other dogs. We wanted a fenced in park because Indy is quite adventurous and love to run. This park is a 20 minute drive from our home, but well worth the drive for us.

The park is not overly large, and is divided into 3 sections. The largest of them is only open during the summer months because during the winter and spring they are letting the grass revive itself after the beating it takes from all the happy paws that run and dig on it during the warmer months. When it is open this section is generally open to all dogs of all sizes.

The next largest section is always covered in mulch and is plenty large for dogs who like to run and play. The mulch is well maintained. This section is open year round and I believe is intended for larger dogs, however most every one brings dog in all sizes here and I've witnessed little aggressive behavior. And if it does occur it is quickly intervened and the aggressor is usually removed without incident.

The last section is smaller and also mulched. But there is still room to run and has a bit of an incline. There is less tree coverage in this section, and I believe it's intended for smaller dogs, but I've rarely witnessed it used for that as most people with smaller dogs tend to let them mingle with the large ones. Most often people who have dogs that don't always get along with other dogs will take their dogs in this section to keep them separated.

To our experience the people here have been quite pleasant and friendly. The park is large enough for the dogs to run and play but small enough that the owners can mingle while still watching their dogs. We've enjoyed the company of many of the regular patrons who often come the same time we do. But if you're a bit of an introvert and want to keep to yourself you'll be just as comfortable.

The dogs that usually come when we go (usually Saturday or Sunday Mornings) are an awesome mix of large and small. Their are often large Great Danes down to small pugs all playing happily together.

If I had to make any complaint it that as the morning get later there will occasionally be dog walkers/sitters who will truck in larger groups of dogs. They are very respectful and often very friendly, but it is sometime hard for them to keep an eye on all the dogs they bring at once. That being said, I've never seem a major incident with any of the dogs they bring, and they are good about separating any less than friendly dogs from the park.

I could go on and on, but needless to say we've been very happy with this park.

All visitors to any dog park

Today, visitors brought their new dog to my dog park. Please read the rules posted on the fence. You are responsible for your own dog. Don't lay your hands on anyone else's dog except your own.

This foolish couple brought their young, unspayed, untrained, and yet unnamed dog <just got the dog> into the park. Other dog gave warning. <At this point, you should not bring your dog into the immediate area - common sense>. The visitor dog was confronted by the growling dog. The foolish man picked up the growling dog in an attempt to throw it over the fence. Growling dog's female owner took acception and attacked said foolish man. Of course short story, police was called. Reports made. It was ugly.

Foolish man, if you laid hands on my dog, it is an attack on me. You should have grabbed your own dog. The other dog's owner is responsible for theirs. You should learn how to control your dog and read the Dog Park Rules before entering.

    Nice Park

I have to say the park is small but does have nice shade for owners and seating. It's always quiet but I only take my dogs for short visits. There is a hiking trail next to the park but it has no shade. I hope to check it out if I make it there in the morning.

    Vicious dog

My dog was killed at this park by a vicious American bulldog. The owner stated that his dog was "just playing". Very irresponsible dog owner with no remorse or ownership of his dog's vicious, antisocial behavior. It was clearly a vicious attack rather than "play".

To the good people that go to this park

This isn't a review about the park, but the people that bring their dogs there. My husband and I were driving past this park in December 2011. We were on our way to a holiday work party held by my husband's employer. When passing the dog park, we were T-boned by an inattentive driver that was turning into the park. Our rental car was totaled, and we were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Before emergency personnel arrived, people at the dog park came to our car, called 911, pried my door off, helped both of us out of the car, and got us a safe distance from the road and vehicle. They stayed with us and cared for us until emergency personnel arrived.

I haven't had my dogs to this park as that would be quite a drive for us (we live in Wisconsin) but I can say people that take their dogs there are awesome. Thank you to those that helped us that afternoon. We will never forget your kindness.

    Better than nothing

I guess I'm spoiled because San Diego has so many dog parks and beaches. This park was clean, and well maintained. There were only a handful of dogs late Sunday morning. The park is small, and is well fenced. Check your dog for ticks after visiting. My 12 week old pup picked up four ticks that day, and the only other place we went was Rincon Beach. I doubt that he got them on the sand, at the beach.

    Not the Best

This park is not well-known and slightly hidden! My dogs loved it and it is well-maintenanced/cleaned. No one ever uses the small-dog zone, though. They usually just play with the ruffians! It is a rather small place, but it's the best that Calabasas could do, and it's better than nothing!
