Monhegan Island trails

About 12 miles of trails, often steep and strenuous, lead through wooded areas and over rocky ledges up to the highest ocean cliffs on the Maine coastline. Volunteers and experienced woodsmen work tirelessly to improve the trails but there will always be a slippery spot or a steep climb. Get a trail map at an Island shop before setting out with your leashed dog. Most of the Island is wild land, with woods and undergrowth so thick you can’t cut across from one trail to another without becoming lost. The trail map published by the Monhegan Associates, showing trails, their names, their numbers, and their difficulty, is reliable, cheap, and easily available. You can view it online but really should plan on purchasing one (for a nominal fee) to carry when you hike away from the Village. You’ll be charged boat fare for your dog and are expected to dispose of its waste as in a city. Visit Website

Great Trails and Island, very dog friendly

I took the Hardy Boat from New Harbor, ME to Monhegan Island for a day trip. It's only an hour and 15 minute boat ride. The dogs fared pretty well for their first time on a boat. Once I got to the island, I bought a map of the trails for $1. We only went on a few trails since we didn't have a lot of time. We had lunch at the Monhegan Island Brewing Co. which is very dog friendly. We saw many other furry friends along the winding paths. It was a great day! Definitely will be back and may even stay over.

    Beautiful day out

We took the Monhegan Boat Line ferry (make reservations in summer!) with our dog, and had a wonderful day hiking the trails and enjoying the oceans views. Our pups loved it! Be sure to buy a trail map at the Monhegan dock and bring poop bags.
