Off-leash trails, woods and meadows, no fenced area

If you have a dog that loves to walk/run off leash and has a solid recall, this park is for you. I took my 9-month-old bernedoodle and she got tons of play time and running. The 2 mile circle we took (with the help of a regular and his wonderful chocolate lab) went through two running creeks and included a large grassy meadow to play some fetch.

The park is beautiful for people, horses and dogs on leashes.

If you have any doubts about your dog, listening to commands when there is horses or wildlife, I’d advise you do not leave your dog off the leashIf you have any doubts about your dog, listening to commands when there is horses or wildlife, I’d advise you do not leave your dog off the leash. Sewickley Heights police will find any reason they can come up with to fine you or take away your dog for any reason they decide, even if they have to make one up. They are very hard to deal with and I don’t recommend anyone having a dog off leash in Sewickley Heights borough or in the park. Best place

I have been shining this park for years. I live being able to have my dog off leash and he loves being off leash.

Go to website and read the rules.

DID YOU KNOW…that fines for violating the following Sewickley Heights Borough dog ordinances start at $100 and can be as high as $1000! Note also the trails are shared resource with horses. Ensure your pups are good with that before trusting them off leash please. It is no fun to have dogs barking/nipping/chasing at horse. If your dog has never experienced a horse, keep them on a leash and ask a rider to stop and help your dog get past the novelty. We all want to enjoy the park.

    Responding to "CB"

The essence of good dog ownership is one having control over one's pet. The great thing about sewickley heights park is that it is one of the few parks which allow off leash dog activity. However, if you can't control your dog off leash...why then- use a leash.

    Fines

We have always loved to take our dog to this lovely park and woods to runt the off leash trails and play with the other dogs. He is very well behaved and trained. However, he is a dog and likes to chase squirrels, deer etc. At last visit, chased after something in the woods. Long story short, he got lost. Before we could find him, someone else did and an officer took him to the station. Fine was $385!!!! Happy to have him back but quite excessive fine especially knowing how distraught we were. Sadly we will have to find a more community friendly place for Fido.

    Dog loved it

My dog and I visited yesterday and he loved it. Very nicely maintained. I will put my GPS on next time, because I got slightly lost on the trails though. I wish they had a map of the area because I did not see the water spot that someone had told me about. We will definitely be back!

Great off leash area in sewickley

We visited this park for the first time recently, and we were really pleased. Dogs are allowed off leash in most parts of the park, except within 100 feet of the parking area and in a select few other designated locations (none of which we came across). I only gave it four stars because it was pretty mucky when we were there -- mainly because some of the trails are also used as equestrian trails -- and because despite plenty of resources for disposal, people still aren't picking up after their dogs as much as I would expect. However, otherwise, it was GREAT. There are wide trail/dirt road areas, woodland trails, and open fields. None are totally fenced, so it is not suitable for people who do not have verbal control of their dogs. All patrons we interacted with were very nice. We probably only saw a dozen dogs and people on a beautiful sunny weekend, so it was a good balance of enough people/dogs but not too busy. Also, from what we heard form others, the 100 ft rule is strictly enforced. There was a police officer spotted in the parking lot while we were there, and they do write fines. At any rate, this park is a GREAT resource for pittsburgh area dog lovers!
