Olympic Discovery Trail

The Olympic Discovery Trail is one of 1600 rail-trails supported by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is working to create a nationwide network of trails from former rail lines and connecting corridors. Previously an unused railroad corridor, this "rail-trail" is now a great place to walk Fido in Port Angeles! The map below shows a parking area with convenient access to the Olympic Discovery Trail. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has generously provided map data for this trail to Bring Fido for informational purposes only. For more detailed trail information, please visit TrailLink.com. Awesome for pups!

This is a must do when visiting Olympic National Park with dogs. Tunnels, Bridges, Lake access. My labs couldn't have been happier. The trail is in great shape. Lots of dogs on the trail but it's extremely wide, so no worries about crowding.

    Nice Hike

The trail is now dog friendly. A nice hike with lots of good views. Easy walking for most any dog or person. We explored the tunnel and found it interesting. 100 years of freeze and thaw has caused the entrances to cave in but there is very little evidence of rocks falling from the ceiling once in the tunnel. Our little beagle had fun jumping over the big railroad ties in the tunnel. We loved the bridge over the lake and loved the color of the water.

Yes, your dog can enjoy it too...

According to the Olympic National Parks Service, your dog is allowed on the Spruce RR Trail. Of all the trails in the park, this is one you will definitely want to do. It has some of the most beautiful scenery when you reach the lake and the bridge. You'll want to bring a flash light and leave the dog with another person on the hike if you plan to enter the RR tunnel, it's pretty interesting...

    Great News!

I just got the word from a park insider that dogs have just been unoffically allowed on the Spruce RR Trail. They were not previously allowed but the Park just agreed to allow the Spruce RR to be redeveloped and designated part of the Olympic Discovery Trail ODT). Once that development is complete, dogs will be officially allowed. Because the agreement was just signed to make the Spruce RR part of the ODT, by default dogs are allowed - although you may still find "no dogs allowed" signs up until the redevelopment is complete.

    Dog Friendly?

This trail is inside the Olympic National Park and no dogs are allowed on Parktrails. However, I see now that the trail is part of the Olympic Discovery Trail Rails-to-Trails system. This is a recent development.

I believe dogs ARE generally allowed on Rails-to-trails. I believe this is where the confusion comes in. I have found conflicting information on the dog issue but 95% of what I find says no dogs are allowed. I plan on going that way this weekend and hope to get this issue cleared up.

    Not dog friendly at all

Sorry, but this is not a "dog friendly" trail at all. As soon as we got there we saw the sign that said "No dogs on trails." So it's great if you and your dog like parking lots!

We did the hike anyway since we drove 100 miles because of this website stating it's "dog friendly." It is very beautiful!
