  Public beaches are dog friendly before 10am and after 6pm btween 5/15- 9/15

  Reminds us of the West Coast

  Our dogs (2 boxers, 1 year old and 1 and half) grew up on the beaches of the California coast - Dog Beach SD, Pismo, Ocean Beach SF, Mendecino... you name it. We moved to NYC recently, and, needless to say, our dogs (and my wife and I) have been so bummed about the East Coast "dog beaches" that we researched before came here. We couldn't be more pleased to have found Montauk; so much wide open space, actual sand (well, close enough), good weather (for the most part), and most important, great dog owners who are mindful and interactive with their hounds. The parking situation stinks and make sure you don't try to walk down a private access path to the beach; the locals frown on that. During the same same time frame you can also have your dogs off leash in the Hamptons, but those beaches don't compare to Montauk, so do yourself a favor and make the trip out to this beach (less windy and better sand). We've covered some ground here on the East Coast looking for great dog beaches; this is the only dog beach we've found that reminds us the west coast. Our dogs love it here and it's a wonderful place for long weekend for the wifey and me. Be sure to remember the summer season restrictions!
