Shawnee National Forest

The dog-friendly Shawnee National Forest covers more than 270,000 acres in parts of ten counties in southern Illinois. The National Forest Service and Illinois Department of Natural Resources maintain dozens of natural areas for recreational use and several wilderness areas. From the 90 foot Pomona Natural Bridge to the remains of a Mississippian Native American village at Millstone Bluff, there are hundreds of miles of hiking trails to choose from. Trails range in length from the 150+ mile River to River Trail that runs between Battery Rock on the Ohio River and Devil's Backbone on the Mississippi River, to the easy one-fourth mile Observation Trail at Garden of the Gods. Dogs must be leashed at all times. Visit Website

    LOVE IT!

I'm new to Illinois and I'm only here for a little while, but I absolutely LOVE hiking with my cat and dog.

My first time being here we hiked the smaller trail and then moved to the big one and it was nothing but beautiful scenery nice long trails. Plenty of nice places to stop and rest as well which is fantastic for my older dog. I will always come back.

    quiet hiking

loved the trails here and stayed in dog-friendly cabins - several ticks were found on dog and people, but that's to be expected - the Forest is so expansive that we rarely encountered another person- beautiful and quiet

    Very Special

Small trip with my dog over Thanksgiving. Joined family in a cabin in Shawnee National Forest. Warm welcome extended to us all. Had a very special time. Spectacular views. Add this to your bucket list.

    Gorgeous Place to Visit

We love visiting Shawnee with our dogs. The trails are dog-friendly (keep your dog on leash and clean up after him so that we dog people can continue to be welcome here). The whole area is so beautiful and peaceful. It's so scenic, you'll forget that you're in Illinois (the land of one continuous paved strip mall). Shawnee is a wonderful place for a getaway with your canine pal. We can't wait for our next visit.
