Hearst San Simeon State Park
Hearst San Simeon State Park is a pet-friendly destination on the Californian coast. This park includes access to the beach via the San Carpoforo Creek, but be careful if you try to walk across the creek as it is sometimes connected all the way to the ocean and may be difficult for Fido. Pet owners looking to go on a wander of the coastline can also check out the Junge Ranch Trail, which allows leashed pups on the 2.2 miles back trail covered in wild flowers. Other than these spots, Fido must be kept on a leash and are not allowed on the trails or beaches. Hearst San Simeon State Park is open from 8am to 10pm every day of the week.

Jim Green Trail
The Jim Green trail begins at the end of Cortez Ave. winding around the north side of Chalk Mountain Golf Course, which is part of the county's 230-acre regional park. Named after the late Jim Green of Atascadero, an outdoor enthusiast responsible for the formation of many hiking and equestrian trails in San Luis Obispo county, the trail begins rather inauspiciously, being flanked by residential homes on one side and railroad tracks on the other, however, within a couple of hundred feet you start to experience more of a true "wilderness feeling." A large trail marker with information about the area will also come into view at this point and you will have to choose which direction to take as the trail is a two-mile loop. Open to hikers, equestrians, bicyclists, and dogs, the trail is an excellent spot for those who want a quick walk (about 40 minutes) that is neither too strenuous nor too easy. The trail is not open to motorized vehicles. Dogs are allowed both on and off-leash; however, leashed is probably preferable because of the prevalence snakes in the area.

The dog park design was created by LGA, an architectural firm under the leadership of Leonard Grant, based in Pismo Beach. The park is about 1 acre in size and is cross fenced for separate “big dog” and “small dog” play areas. The park construction and maintenance will be paid for by donations and loans from dog owners and local businesses.
