Known locally as “El Gran Desfile de Día de Muertos,” the Day of the Dead parade in Mexico City has become a major event, which precedes the actual holiday. The parade displays some of the beautiful ancestral traditions of Day of the Dead, complete with large skeleton puppets, moving altars, alebrijes traditional dancers, and more. The parade begins at Puerta de los Leones (entrance to Chapultepec Park), then travels up Av. Paseo de la Reforma, and ends at the Zocalo. It is advised to arrive as early as possible as millions of people attend each year.

Throughout Mexico City, there are candlelit cemeteries to wander through for an intimate experience of this ancestral tradition. There will also be many big and festive activities, such as parades and concerts.

Day of the Dead is a giant festival in Oaxaca and surrounding towns. The "official" dates are Oct 31-Nov 2, but you'll find events from Oct 29 through Nov 4. There are many activities, from parades and comparsas to events at cemeteries. Most Mexicans also build an altar in their homes to remember and welcome the ghosts of loved ones that have passed on. The altars are usually decorated with leaves and red and gold flowers, photos of the loved ones as well as their favorite food and drink.
