Dogs and bears: How worried should I be?

My husband and I are planning to camp and hike in Colorado this summer with our labrador retriever. A lot of sites say that dogs should not be hiking in Colorado because they could incite a bear attack. We hike and climb with our off-leash dog in New England all the time and never have a problem. Are the Colorado warnings real or they simply precautionary? We really don't want to leave our dog at home. Thanks for your advice!
