Elk Creek Cabins

There are two rental cabins available at a remote Guard Station in Bear Valley, located in a scenic meadow adjacent to Elk Creek and the Frank Church Wilderness at an elevation of 6400 feet. There is no water or electric available at the cabin, but firewood is provided for heat. Access to the cabins is by snowmobile or X-C skiing (15 miles from Highway 21) only. There are thirty miles of groomed snowmobile trails, and many open meadows for snowmobiling nearby. Summer temperatures are 70-80 degrees during the days with cool nights. Winter highs are usually in the 20s to 30s, with lows averaging -15 to +5 degrees. Tent, RV or trailer camping is not permitted on site, and the garbage policy is strictly pack-in/pack-out. To get to the cabins, drive east on Highway 21 from Lowman for approximately 40 miles to Cape Horn. Park in the plowed parking and snowmobile/ski/snowshoe on the the Landmark Stanley Road (FS579) for approximately 15 miles into Elk Creek. Alternate access from the Boise area if Highway 21 is closed between Grandjean and Banner Summit: From Lowman snowmobile north on the Clear Creek Road (FS582) for approximately 34 miles. Go west on the Landmark Stanley Road for approximatley 3 miles to the Cabin. Depending on grooming conditions alternate routes may be available. Take a map and know how to use it.
