Description

The historic Hotel Eklund is a taste of the real old west in downtown Clayton, NM. In 1894, Carl Eklund, a Swedish immigrant, came to Clayton, NM and bought the building. He opened the Saloon using the historic bar and back-bar which is still in use today. It is said that he won the bar in a poker game with ten dollars he had borrowed. Guest rooms feature free high speed wireless internet, complimentary coffee, writing desks, iron and ironing board available upon request, hairdryer, cable TV, laundry services and personal toiletries upon request. Hotel Eklund Dining Room has been an oasis of Victorian elegance in the heart of the wild west and is open for a continental breakfast every day for breakfast from 7-9 am, and daily for lunch from 10:30-2 pm and dinner beginning at 4 pm. The Eklund Saloon bar, which Carl Eklund won in a poker game, provides a dramatic centerpiece. Enjoy a selection of New Mexico craft beers on tap, open a bottle of regional wine offerings, or just stop in for a hearty plate of chef Mark?s signature meatloaf. The Eklund Patio & Beer garden hosts live music several times a month during the summer and the baleful whistle of coal trains year-round. There is an outdoor smoking area and pets are welcome.

    Historical Hotel

We have stayed many times without our dog, this time we brought her with us and felt very welcome with our dog and the low fee of $20 was very reasonable. Considering this an old hotel they did have an elevator, major plus.

    Living history

Staff was warm, welcoming and knew their history. Historical building in downtown with some really cool features. Dogs felt comfortable even with the squeaky floors.

    Historic, but run-down hotel

It was fun to stay at the Hotel Eklund in Clayton, NM. Clayton is a tiny town that sat on the Goodnight-Loving cattle trail in the late 19th century. This was the trail where Texas Rangers Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving hustled cattle from Texas to Colorado, which inspired Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" series of novels. The hotel dates back to those glory years of the cattle trail. Unfortunately, both the town of Clayton and the hotel have lost much of their former glory. The history and the people at the hotel are very nice. The hotel itself, however, is fairly rundown. But again, they were very nice to us and our pups.

    Indoors fine

Clayton is a fading town. The Eklund is an 1890s place the owners keep in great shape. Because of neighborhood no special place for dog relief. But we and the dog persevered. Owners very welcoming.

    Great eclectic hotel (circa 1890s)

Low season, only about three rooms on three floors were occupied. A ‘real sleeper’ in
the extreme NE corner of NM.

    Historical location

Historical hotel; not fancy, but adequate and met our needs. Has an outdoor dining area and space to walk the dog.

Quaint hotel in an otherwise boring town

Room was comfortable. Breakfast was very good. The lady that checked us in was very friendly and interesting. They had an outdoor patio which our dog was not allowed to be which meant she had to stay in room and they did not want dog left in room for more than an hour. It was. Sunday and nothing was open. There really is no green area for dog to relieve herself. Was told that we would certainly find places around town that our dog could use. Like empty lots with very little grass. I ended up walking her around town until she relieved herself which was really okay for me because I need the exercise. No place to exercise dog.

    Great Night

We enjoyed our stay in this quaint, historic hotel. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. The room reminded me of my grandmother’s house long ago. I loved the faint sound of a train.
The bathroom was spacious and very clean.
Due to Covid, the dining room and saloon weren’t open, but there was still a to go breakfast waiting for us.
The front desk lady was very kind and accommodating.
If passing through this area again, I would look forward to another stay.

Great historic hotel, great dog treatment!

Our stay was great. The hotel had it’s own restaurant which was a nice plus. The owners and all employees were extremely accommodating. We will stay there again, very nostalgic of the old west!
