I don’t write a lot of reviews, the ones I do are normally to rave about an experience. This on the other hand is the other end of the spectrum. We were driving back from the Gold Coast and decided to break the trip into two days and stay in Coffs Harbour with my wife, myself, and our toy poodle Mak. The whole trip we had used recommendations from BringFido and they were excellent (Freddies Apartment on the Gold Coast was great, so was GoBoat).
We booked online through Agoda and arrived at the Coffs Windmill Motel in the evening. After checking in which was a quick process, we went to our room unpacked and I went out to get us some dinner. While out I received a call from my wife saying we were being kicked out of the room. Confused, I rang the motel to have them say that they had heard a dog in our room and that we were in violation of the motel policy.
I explained we had booked pet friendly accommodation and there must be some mistake, to which I was informed that the room allocated wasn’t one of their pet-friendly rooms and that we had to vacate and forfeit the room ($172), pay a $400 cleaning fee, and if I wanted a pet-friendly room that would be an additional $250 for the night as it was last minute.
Enraged by this I went back to the hotel to find the manager and a male cleaner standing in front of our room ordering my wife out of the room and treating us like criminals. It took a call to my solicitor to bring sense to the situation and eventually we agreed that we would keep the room for the evening and pay a $150 cleaning fee (which I still found outrageous but had no choice as it was too late to make alternative arrangements).
This whole experience had left a foul taste in my mouth, however as it was resolved we should just let it go and move on with our lives. Until today (a month later), the hotel contacted Agoda to try and extract another $400 cleaning charge (email available). Completely perplexed as poodles don’t malt, he is house trained and stayed in his carrier. What was this for? I cannot express how angry I am and believe this hotel should be removed as a recommendation as a pet-friendly establishment.
