Notes from the host
2/2 House with Fenced Yard
This 100 year old home has charm that will make you smile. Minutes to Asheville, it offers peace, warmth, and relaxation. Guests always comment on the enchanting feel of this unique artists retreat. Resident goats and chickens should be here until at least 6/24.
Open floor plan, vaulted ceilings, skylights, and unique boulder landscaping with three water features create a happy oasis minutes from Asheville fun. Inside, enjoy 2 bedrooms with their own bathrooms, large kitchen with washer/dryer, and open living room/dining room(loft seen in the pictures off limits/used for storage). Outside, enjoy a fire pit, back deck, and front porch. Two bundles of wood provided for the fire pit. If needed, more wood is sold right up the street. Coffee, towels, and sheets are provided.
The house is located between Asheville and Black Mountain. It is 8 miles to the Biltmore Estate and downtown Asheville, 2 miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and 1 mile to Warren Wilson College. Uber everywhere if you like. No windy or steep roads, so you will be safe and know where you are. It is on a dead end street shared with 2 residential neighbors, as well as a high end timber frame company. Saws and trucks can sometimes be heard during the week, but no-one has complained, especially with the nostalgic aroma of freshly cut cedar in the air.
Wifi and google home smart speakers in every room. Watch movies on a 43" Smart TV with surround sound. TV has Roku streaming for personal accounts such as Hulu and Netflix. There is a DVD player, lots of board games, and vintage Atari with Pacman.
At least until 8/22, there should be two goats and some chickens on the property. The goats names are Chloe and Rudolph. The chickens names are Holdout, Cluck Norris, Slartibartfast, and Banana. There are approved rations of snacks that you can feed out of your hand. Please follow goat and chicken rules if interacting with them. Sometimes there are fresh eggs to enjoy.
Very important disclosures:
-If you do not have a dog, before booking please consider dogs may have been present because dogs are allowed, and livestock either lives on the property or just left. Home is cleaned extremely well between guests, and you probably won't notice at all, but if you have allergies there may be dog hair and odors that literally cannot be controlled.
-Please realize this is a 100 year old farmhouse renovated with largely recycled, early 19th century materials. It has a wonderful heat pump and AC and is insulated well, yet is not perfectly tight due to its age. Its imperfections add character, but it is not a new house or hotel room by any means.
-Mattresses are very nice memory foam and are fairly firm. If you have back issues that do not like firmness please be advised. I do have one really nice queen air mattress as an alternative upon request, and there is an assortment of different stiffness pillows to suit most everyone.
-Parking area and driveway is gravel, not pavement. Please realize this when walking in heels or very nice shoes.
-Property is near a timber frame shop that makes old fashioned mortis and tenon beams. Saws and trucks can sometimes be heard.
-Please note that the livestock is not a feature of the listing, just a fun bonus if they are there. The owner reserves the right to remove them at any time. Please do not book the house because the goats and chickens.
Please consider all this before booking. It is elegantly rustic, not new and perfect. If there are any special questions or issues you have, please inquire before booking. -John
Guest/Owner interaction:
Self check-in. House is only used for vacation rental. I am happy to answer any questions and be there for needs that may arise. I live in a tiny house on the property 150 feet away over a privacy fence. I feed the goats in the morning as early as 5:30am, and in the evening. I respect your privacy and will not come over unless you need something or have a question. In fact, I rarely even meet my guests. I may see you while feeding the goats, or in the driveway which is always nice. I am also a working artist that does sculpture work. You may see or hear me working from the shop on the property building artwork. I've done 95% of all the interior and exterior pieces you will see. Don't be shy to say hi. -John
Please treat the house as you would that of a close friend or family member. I would like to find the house very close to the condition in which I left it.
House Rules-
1) The house is 100 years old. It has terra cotta pipes that clog very easily. Please be easy on the toilet paper. Do not flush anything else, including "flushable wipes". Absolutely nothing else.
2) If GOATS are here (at least until 3/24)- READ INSTRUCTIONS INSIDE THE HOUSE. Please go into the goat pen just during daytime hours only, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Every time you go in and out, MAKE SURE the latches are secure on the gate behind you. NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED IN THE GOAT PEN, no matter how sweet the dog is. Goats are extremely afraid of dogs, and dogs think they are playing when they run and it can terrorize the goats and it could end up bad. It is best to feed the goats treats over the fence from the deck. The large one is Chloe, and the little one is Rudolph.
3) The loft up above is off limits. It is a private storage space.
4) No smoking in the house at all. Please use provided ashtrays outside.
5) No fires in the fireplace. The 100 year old mortar joints are unsafe. Please use the fire pit outside. ALWAYS use the water bucket and extinguish the fire pit fire before you go to bed or leave the house.
6) DOGS- 2 DOG MAXIMUM. Dogs must be crated (2 fold up crates with blankets supplied) when dogs left alone in house, and they are NOT ALLOWED ON BEDS. Please please pick up behind them outside with supplied doggie bags. At checkout, sweep up or vacuum any and all dog hair that has accumulated in the house. Also make sure their nails are trimmed and do not have fleas at all. I do not ask for a pet deposit, but I would expect to be compensated out of fairness for dog damage, including scratched floors and flea bombing. Please know there may be guests coming in the day you leave and your dogs hygiene could ruin someones stay.
7) No throwing glitter all over the place.
