    elegant comfortable pet-friendly hotel

The Empress is iconic. Many (most?) Fairmont hotels are dog-friendly which makes them a reliable choice in this particular price range. We visited the Empress on labour day weekend 2023, after driving cross-country with our (shy) rescue dog. We requested a room on a lower floor, and to be near stairwells to access the outside for our dog. The check-in was warm and friendly (as you'd expect with this price-range of hotel) but they also made us feel comfortable even though we had our pup (sometimes you get the sense that the hotels barely tolerate travelling pets). Our room was lovely, clean, classic and on the 4th floor. We navigated the stairwells to get our dog in and out each morning, which would have been much harder on a higher floor. What was most enjoyable was the dog-friendly area on the terrace restaurant (patio). The staff was incredibly welcoming and made us feel that our business was appreciated (despite having our pup with us). The setting is spectacular, near the harbour and close to most tourist attractions. The nearby dog-friendly 10 Acres Bistro actually allows dogs INside, so we ate there on a cooler evening and had 1 dinner at the Empress, but it was high-end, fine-dining at its best, with great ambiance.

    Service could have been better

Fairmont is supposed to be a flagship brand hotel. They have the most historic and beautiful properties and their prices are usually the highest in resort towns. The building and grounds of the Fairmont Empress are spectacular but the service is not really up to a 5 star hotel status. I have stayed at many "pet friendly" hotels before and usually they have a "pet welcome" kit which includes dog bowls and even a small dog biscuit. There was nothing like that at the Empress. I know some may argue "first world problems" but a vacation is something that people save up for, dream about, and look forward to. When as a guest the staff appears to be indifferent I think that indicates a problem at the management level. The human food at the Fairmont was not as good as one would expect for a 5 star hotel. I ordered a "fish and chips" lunch and it was half cooked. I think hotel management needs improvement.

    Beautiful hotel

The Empress hotel is beautiful, comfortable and welcoming! They provide many doggie essentials to make your stay as wonderful as possible. Very friendly staff. We met the hotel dog Winston who was very sweet.

    LOVE

I've been a guest at the Empress a couple of time, and also have been just for high tea, staff are always very warm and knowledgeable and it is one of the most pet friendly hotels I've ever stayed at, all sizes of dogs, pretty sure I saw some cats, and no one batted an eye at any of the different breeds. Definitely recommend staying here, especially during Christmas! super fun :)
