Lots of spaces to relax in & plenty of places to walk the dog. Limited menu & bar was closed but we made do with few choices & skipped the drinks. The room was spacious & comfortable but the bathroom was odd. The toilet looked like it came from a vintage elementary school & the tub/shower from Home Depot.

What a pleasant surprise for dogs and their people! While we stayed just one night — passing through on an extended road trip — we will definitely return for future visits. Comfortable beds, large rooms, refined fixtures and artwork, delicious breakfast buffet, and more! Do your pet and yourself a favor by booking a room at the Highlander when traveling to Iowa City.

I reserved a poolside room and we were put in a standard room. Ended up overpaying for a standard room and not getting the experience we wanted as we chose this more expensive property because of the poolside room/amenities at the pool. Will not be going back as they had poolside rooms available that they were unwilling to move us into. They also did not provide any pet amenities.

The Highlander was exceptional in its care of our fido and his humans (namely, us). Large, open grassy spaces for runs, fetch, leisurely walks. Off the main highway just enough to be quiet and comfortable, yet close enough to be easy on/easy off. The decor is authentically retro and boho. Not overdone, just perfect! This place is a true gem in all ways.

We stayed here in July on the way home from picking up our new puppy and it was the perfect spot. The hotel has kind of a 70's vibe and it has an interesting layout. Our puppy was greeted at the front desk with lots of petting and the offer of a treat. The man at the front desk was super welcoming to us and our puppy. He put us in a room that was close to an exit to make it easy to go in and out for potty breaks. Lots of grassy areas for walking and potty needs. Because we had a new not yet fully vaccinated puppy; we were also pleased to see there was a large paved area all around the hotel where we could safely walk our dog. The room itself was huge and we were so relieved to find the room was carpet-free!! The LVT flooring was perfect for pets!! I feel like this hotel is located off the beaten path which makes it nice and quiet. However, there were not a lot of restaurants close by & that's the only downside. Would stay here again.

The hotel is surrounded by green space. The room had a sliding glass door directly out to access the green space. Easy in, easy out. It's not near downtown but easy access to the highway.

We have been traveling cross-country with our dog for 13 years now and pick random stops along our way to try out. The Highlander has been my favorite stop in those 13 years! It’s only 2 levels which helps with a aging pup, and reduce noise. We did have a room on the bottom floor right by the door for easy access for dog bathroom breaks. The room was comfortable with all the things you need and none of the stuff you don’t. Each room seems to have its own theme with artwork etc. The 1970s vibe was appreciated and we almost booked another night just to hangout there. The staff was very helpful, accommodating and super friendly! The parking lot was massive and we could actually park right next to our room (that doesn’t happen often). All in all If we are ever in the area again I will most definitely stay here again. I know this location has a history but it would be cool to see these in other cities around the US.

The Highlander is in a wonderful quiet location with tons of grassy area for dogs to play. Rooms have retro vibe, and comfortable beds. However, they seem in need of a little refresh. Towels are kind of old and bathrooms have patches on the walls where things must have fallen off. Still, if running your pups after many hours in the car, this place is perfect!

A surprise find on our XC trip! Convenient and right off the freeway - solid food and drinks on site after a long day. They have a nice indoor pool and several lounges where you can watch sports on the big screens. Throwback arcade also! Rooms are clean and bed was comfy. Dogs aren’t welcome in the lounge/restaurant and ours wasn’t keen on staying alone in the room. Lots of grassy areas outside to walk the dog. This would be a fun place during warmer months when they open up the pool area. Would def come back!

Totally did not expect to find this little hole in the wall hotel in Iowa city,but it needs more advertising! Wicked cute retro vibe, vinyl available to listen to, great buffet breakfast, perfect for our golden doodle. they had a restaurant and poolside bar that we wish we had more time to experience. snack shack open 24/7.

The staff went above and beyond during our stay at the Highlander in Iowa City. There isn’t any pet sitting, yet, but they checked in on my dog in our room when I had to be away for a few hours. Highly recommended and we will go back!

You can tell they are really working to create a great experience here. We received several texts to inform us of various services. You can check out a record player and vinyl oldies if you wish. The room was spacious and decorated with sort of a retro bohemian vibe. Plenty of grassy area for doggy business. We did not eat dinner here but they do have food available and the menu looked great to me. The muffins at breakfast were freshly baked and they have a yogurt machine with a fresh fruit toppings available. Will definitely return next time we are needing lodging in this area.

Rooms were great for dogs - no carpet. Recent renovation bright trendy retro decor. Nice pool. The place just seemed not quite ready for prime time. Ordered food from the bar which never showed up; bartender was also front desk clerk, and technology to deliver orders to the kitchen wasn’t working. The place had great potential; just hot they can survive to make a go of it.

My family stayed here with out Boston Terrier. It’s very big but still has a boutique feel. It was clean, had amazing food options and the pool was great. We loved having plenty of places to walk our four-legged family member. We would definitely stay here again!

Went here for my family staycation and brought our husky. Loved having a courtyard room for easy access to outdoor grassy space complete with firepits, cornhole, bocce ball and a grassy area for dog walks. Rooms are simplistic and open, comfy beds, sliding glass doors to watch outdoor activity or close the heavy curtains to block it out. Loved not having to walk through the hotel every time to take dog out.

This is a great place to stay if you're passing through Iowa, going to Iowa City or need a place for a staycation. They have an awesome staff, huge indoor pool, lots of fun games, a vinyl lending library and they are super dog friendly!
