        No Potty Area

This is a great hotel except there’s no where for pups to potty. We had to walk ten minutes so my pup could relieve himself.

        Not dog friendly

We chose the Birnham because it had the best ratings even though it was the most expensive. We had 3 main concerns with the hotel:

        1. There was nowhere to walk our dog unless you chose to walk in an unlit back alley or on the sidewalks with extremely heavy foot traffic. All green spaces near the hotel are closed to pet traffic by city bylaw (i.e. Millenium Park).

        2. All provided "services" were for an additional fee and hotel staff were obviously not comfortable with our dog. He is large, but a lab; not threatening. I did not feel comfortable with my pet in the hotel.

        3. They put us on the 9th floor. There are two elevators for the entire hotel. This meant that each time we took our dog out we had to share the elevator with guests who were uncomfortable with dogs. The elevators (and stairs) also opened directly adjacent to the restaurant; which meant we had to walk through waiting customers to access the outside doors.

I would say that this hotel allows dogs, but I would in no way say that it is pet friendly.

I would definitely stay there again.

I recently stayed at the Burham hotel in Chicago and I would like to say that it was a wonderful experience. The staff was great with my dog, I would definitely stay there again.

lovely place but for one flaw

This is a lovely, well-run hotel in the heart of Chicago. The rooms are very nice, and the historic elevators are beautiful. We would have had a great stay except for the problem that our very elderly dog could not walk far enough in the sweltering heat to find a potty place. There is a lot of concrete around the hotel and not a blade of grass to be found. The several blocks to the park certainly did not seem like a short walk to me, as I was semi-carrying my 50-lb dog, dragging my kids, and walking through the heat and traffic of big city rush hour. Ultimately, we just could not make it. I managed to get us back to the hotel (a true challenge) without the potty deed done. I asked the desk person what I could do and they suggested that my best bet would be to lift the dog over a fence into the landscaping along the tree lawn. I'm fairly sure that this is illegal, but finally this is what I did-- lifted my dog over a two-foot fence (clearly intended to keep dogs out) and let her stomp on and pee on begonias and spider plants that the city had nicely put there. I had to deal with gawkers and dirty looks and guilt, but there truly was no other way. Although this was an unusual set of circumstances, I can see how others could have a similar problem-- say, sub-zero wind chill with a puppy for instance, or dog with bladder infection in the pouring rain. The hotel should really create a 10 foot square of grass somewhere, right outside their door on a section of sidewalk, or on a roof top garden, or somewhere for this purpose. Now THAT would make it dog-friendly. If you have a young, active dog and the weather is fine, this will not be an issue for you. Otherwise, take this into consideration before you book.

        THE BEST EVER!

What a find! We arrived with our two dogs; one huge and one little. The staff was great! This isn't just dog-friendly... this place is dog-loving! The hotel itself is beautiful and you couldn't ask for a better location. No more kennels for our dogs... we can enjoy the city with them in tow thanks to the Burnham.

        Wonderful Experience

The front desk staff were very friendly and interested in our dog, even coming out from behind the desk to meet and greet. The hotel is in a great location, and a short walk to the lake front. Dining at Atwood is top notch, and the historic floors are worth the upgrade. Our dog was welcome at the wine hour.

        It was GREAT!

I stayed here with my two pugs after attending the Chicago Pug Party. It was GREAT! They served wine in the lobby in the evening and the pugs and I had room service delivered for dinner. They brought up a doggie bed and water dishes for the dogs as well. [The pugs were tired after the Pug Party so we stayed in.] The next day my niece popped over and we went to Navy Pier and on an architectural boat tour up the Chicago river. There is a LOT to do in Chicago WITH your dogs. Both Navy Pier and the boat trip were dog-friendly. The Hotel Burnham's service was excellent from the valet parking to the room service. I highly recommend it. [The front desk is supposed to have plastic bags for dog doo-doo but I had my own. If your dog needs grass to go, go out the door and turn right -- it's there about a block away. If you turn left, you might find a couple of weeds growing in a crack in the cement.]
