I had been driving nearly 4hrs to get to this hotel. I dragged our belongings into the elevator and down a long hall and was too exhausted for anything but sleep. I checked in for two nights and was prepared to stay longer if I had to (we’re moving into a near by apt. and our things won’t arrive for a few more days.) It never occurred to me that I was supposed to do a close inspection of my room upon arrival. I’m supposed to trust Extended Stay America is professional enough to provide a clean room; multiple posters around the lobby and in the elevator assured me they had a special 10 point cleaning system to not only keep us safe from germs but COVID-19 too!
The beds looked fresh made, the room was ugly but adequate. I overlooked the fact that the rooms hadn’t been updated for many years. The cabinets were white, cheap and flimsy things stuck in the corner of the room. We couldn’t even get the cart through it. The stove top looked decades old, I didn’t even recognize the type, my mom said she hadn’t seen anything like it since the seventies or eighties. They did not stock the kitchen with anything! There wasn’t one cup or plate or anything, not even a coffee pot! I went to the front desk for a few things, he wanted to know how many cup, spoons, etc. I needed! You have to ask for every item individually! Does every Extended Stay America work this way? I went to a Hyatt Home2 earlier in my trip and the kitchen was nicely supplied, the room modern, clean, stress free!
The next morning, I went to take a shower and found someone’s hair stuck to the wall of the shower. It wasn’t easy to see at first, the shower/tub is this funky yellow spotted stuff. Never seen anything like it. Then I saw that there were layers of soap grime on the shelf. The curtain was dirty at the bottom. My ick factor went through the roof. Alarms went off in my head. If they didn’t clean the shower, what else didn’t they clean?
We went out and got an air bed and some pillows etc. and brought them to the apt., then went back to get our stuff. I know I should have have mentioned it immediately, and knew they wouldn’t give us our money back but I thought they would at least like to know. I told the guy at the desk why we were leaving. He accused me of lying to get my money back. I told him I wasn’t asking for money, though I should, I just thought he would be concerned about his staff not doing their job. He just stared at me stonily. I handed back the pet magnet they give you to put on the door, he didn’t want to touch it and directed me to put it in this basket to be sanitized. I shook my head, and said “You care about the magnet being clean, but you don’t care about the room?” There was never even an apology.
