The most beautiful coastal off leash dog park in all of California!!!!! The most beautiful sand dunes, roaming dunes of ice plants, sand, & the Pacific Ocean. Any dog owner in the local SF/Daly City area know and go to Fort Funston. PS you can watch Hang Gliders take off & return from Fort Funston cliff.
A great, friendly spot with several trails, stairs, and slopes. A community water fountain with many bowls. Several bag stations to keep things contained. Highly recommend!

Down on the beach
If you do make it down to the beach you will be rewarded with an almost endless area for your dogs to run and play. Many people walk in a loop, accessing the beach from either the stair ladder by the hang glider area or from the sandy trail (signposted) off the northern end. But if the tide is fully in this is not possible unless you don't mind getting your feet wet. Also, be on the look out for occasional dead seals or birds that are left rotting on the beach and which many dogs love to rub against. In case that happens, you could wash your dog at the faucet at the base of the drinking fountain at the parking lot. Or for really bad cases, take them to the wash station at the Petco store at the nearby Westlake Shopping Plaza! ($10 per dog at time of writing, 9/2017)

Ladder stairs down to the beach
To access the beach from the parking lot, walk along the sandy path at the edge of the Hang-glider area. To find your way back up from the beach look for the lone Cypress Tree which marks access to the trail leading to the steps. It's a fairly steep climb up and the steps are not evenly distributed, but there is a rope railing if you need a bit of support.

Paved trail along the cliffs at Fort Funston
One trail (Sunset Trail) along the cliff tops is paved and is wheelchair accessible for the most part. It offers spectacular views of the ocean, Farralon Islands, the coastline to the south and the Marin Headlands to the north. If you're lucky you can even see migrating whales or dolphins in season. Halfway along this trail you will find a water station with several bowls for dogs.
