Bass Harbor Lighthouse

taken from the visitmaine website: "Built in 1858, this is one of the most picturesque and frequently photographed Maine lights. It sits atop a rugged, pink rock cliff surrounded by dark evergreens. Located on the southern end of Mt. Desert Island, it's a cylindrical tower attached to the keeper's house by a short, enclosed passageway. Grounds are open year round." There are so trails and rocks for dogs to climb down on and a few bluffs for great photos. Make sure you are wearing sneakers and not sandals as the rocks are a bit slippery with the dust and dirt on them, and those close to the water are slippery as well... PS a Coast Guard family lives in the keeper's house and asks that their privacy be respected. The light is visible from the end of Lighthouse Road in Bass Harbor or by cruise or plane.. There are 2 rest rooms located in the parking lot BUT there are no sinks in either. Please make sure to bring your own fresh water for you and your dog. Visit Website

    Crowded, small, no view

I would not recommend this. We went on a Wednesday morning, and there was a line to get into the parking lot. It’s a short, narrow path that is crowded if more than 5 people are there. You really cannot see much at all. To quote the high school field trip students behind us “there are hundreds of lighthouses in Maine and this isn’t even the best.”

    Pretty But Trail Closed

Gorgeous view, but trail was closed, so not much to do.

Pretty but not a lot of trail

This place is absolutely beautiful! But since I'm rating it for dogs, it's just okay. There's a path down to the lighthouse and a trail that's nearly hidden. The trail is very short and leads to a series of wooden steps to the rocks. Make sure your dog likes to climb because that's all there is to do.

The scenery is beautiful, and I give it a thumbs up as a human. If you're with dogs, it's a nice place to stop by, but I wouldn't go out of your way to visit.
