- MarinaSep 1, 2024Lovely, but very busy
This walk was scenic and fun but incredibly crowded. People stop every few feet for photos and it wasn‘t ideal to navigate through with a dog. Newport has many other beautiful parks and walks that our pup enjoyed more than this.
- JoJun 22, 2024Early morning walk
The cliffwalk was a fairly nice 3.5 mile hike on a very hot 90+ day. The breeze and views are amazing but the path detours into dirt and grass roads at about halfway. We went on Juneteenth so it was a federal holiday at 7:30 am, and encountered about 25 people mostly runners. There were only 2 with dogs. Luckily half way through there is a public rest room and some kind soul left a bowl of water for dogs. The second half was difficult terrain of rocks which our dog had no issue climbing but it was not good for a senior like me. So shortly after that the walk is closed for repairs or possibly forever. If I ever did it again I would turn back at the rocks and carry a bowl and water. Our dog was pooped after his 5 mile walk.

Like others said, well paved and dogs on leash. Great view for the humans and lots of sniffing on the grass for the pups. Went at sunset so got a bit dark on the walk back but made it back ok with lights on their collars.
- MariaJul 4, 2023Most relaxing walk!
My dog and I had the best morning stroll! We started at the 40 steps (there’s street parking for $2!) and took a left and walked down to first beach and back. All dogs on the trail are on leashes. It is wide enough that if you have a reactive dog you’d be fine! lots of room to step aside and not stress your pup out! Lots of great sniffs!
- KristiJul 3, 2023Beautiful views!
we loved taking our dog here! early AM (7/8am) is not crowded at all and the views were amazing! crowds began around 9/930am

Awesome adventure for dogs. Nice, safe walk along the coast! Lots of people had their dogs on the trail with them. Dogs must be leashed, and should be for safety on this walk. It was fun and our dog had as much fun as we did!

Awesome dog friendly adventure! Bring lots of water! None of the water stations worked on the trip, but besides that it made for a great day!
- SamanthaSep 30, 2020Beautiful experience!
My boyfriend and I took our dog Milo here over the weekend and had a beautiful day. Milo loved exploring the trail and we enjoyed the breathtaking views of Newport. Highly recommend bringing your dog here!
- StephanieJul 30, 2020Dog Friendly Stroll
I walked this with my dog and everyone we encountered didn’t seem to mind dogs being on the path. It was great exercise with spectacular views. There are no water stations so be sure to bring your own. I would definitely recommend this activity!
- SueSep 28, 2019Beautiful Views and Friendly Faces
The Cliff Walk is one of my favorite places in Newport. On slower days you can take your well-behaved pup for an off-leash stroll without worrying about upsetting anyone. Everyone we passed on the walk was super friendly and many people stopped to greet and pet our dogs. There is a short portion of the walk that you have to step over some large gaps since you’ll be traversing large boulders, so some uncoordinated dogs may trip a bit. You can see surfers surfing the waves on most days. It’s really beautiful!!!
- SamanthaJun 24, 2019Great walk
Our girls (both small dogs) had a great time on the walk. Definitely make sure to bring enough water - particularly if it turns out to be a hot day. They had a great time trotting along, and we completed the entire length of the walk. Something to keep in mind: even though the walk itself is dog friendly, the transit back to the beginning is not, so we needed to split up, one getting the car and one staying with the girls. Something to keep in mind!
- CourtneyJun 11, 2019Gorgeous!
Amazing walk near the water with spectacular home viewing! We could only get as far as the breakers due to the rough terrain, but it was a wonderful walk!
- CaroleApr 29, 2018Great walk for everybody
We enjoyed the walk very much and so did our bernese mountain dog. There is a short rocky part that a large dog can handle and small dogs can be held in arms. Count 1h30 return from Forty Steps to Sheep Point

This is a concrete trail along the outer harbor of Newport, Rhode Island. It's dog friendly and not too busy. Go to the Narragansett Ave street parking. Walking south is beautiful views. It can be a bit narrow if you have a dog and you're walking at a busy time.
- LanceMore than a year agoTerrific views
Dogs are not allowed at Easton's beach, but they are permitted at the "Cliff Walk"!!.... My 14 year old dog and I walked approx. 1 miles.. Then, turned around. During the walk, we enjoyed a beautiful view of the water and some of the mansions.. **Only a few benches and no water fountains.. : Parking at meters on Memorial Blvd... An easy and picturesque activity...
