My girl and I got there at the park’s opening time on a Saturday and it was BEAUTIFUL! There are so many trails and most people are very respectful of the park’s request to keep quiet so everyone can enjoy the natural ambiance. There are a few benches around to pause at to take breaks and they have interesting historical info signs. I will say the downsides to the trip was that the paths can be very narrow and there can be a LOT of other dogs. Most people I ran into had friendly dogs but there were two occasions where I turned the other way until I reached a more open space so the other owner could pass without risk of encounter due to the other dog’s body language. Additionally, I say it’s dog for active dogs and dogs with mid to long legs— there are tons of steep, tall stairs and there’s a portion of slick rock to reach one waterfall. Thankfully my girl is only 32 pounds so I could carry her when needed but I know other people aren’t so lucky with their seniors. Overall, with or without dog, I highly recommend visiting!

We are so glad we took your advice and visited this lovely park. Lots of easy walking and beautiful scenery. We picnicked and really enjoyed ourselves here. The only draw-back was that our little Puggle Miss Blair was afraid of open-backed steps and that limited some of the hiking.

Miles of dog friendly trails, especially at the far end of the trail by Illinois cannon as this end is quieter and more natural

Hiked Saint Louis Canyon then went to the outdoor patio at the Lodge. They have doggie menus! Lots of well behaved pups on the patio. Highly recommend.

It’s has miles and miles of dog friendly trails and canyons of water for the dogs to play in. Do bring water in the dry season.
- CatherineSep 19, 2018many trails
much wide open space on the river, and many trails that lead to beautiful canyons - trails mostly good with some rocky areas - bring your bug spray and plenty of water- park often closes parking early on weekends- best to check status on Starved Rock facebook site updates
