A welcomed leg-stretcher for my dogs

I stumbled across this area doing an internet search for dog-friendly trails in San Diego county. I visited San Diego for a long weekend with my two German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) Minnie and Sadie and needed a quick stop for them for some exercise before that long nine-hour drive across the desert back to Arizona.

Not all the locals know about this place or can explain how to get there, but one friendly local gave me spot-on directions: Take the throughway (main street) east through Alpine and turn south just before the Albertson's store. This is South Grade Road. Drive on it for a mile and you will see an open field to your right. Watch out for a blue trash can as that's the only indicator besides vehicles parked along here. While the signs say that dogs must be leashed, I saw at least two groups of dog walkers with their well-behaved dogs off-leash, and that is what I did as well, although I had my leashes with me should my dogs get close to other dogs.

The open space is for non-motorized traffic only. Trails criss-cross each other all over this rolling field, and homes dot the landscape along the perimeter. We spent an hour here power-walking the outer trails, racking in two miles in the already hot summer morning sun before we got back into our car and continued our drive into Arizona. The drought had killed off any wildflowers here, but in the spring and winter I'm sure this is a beautiful area to stroll across.
